Both the concept and the text of The Nanyang Intelligence Bureau were jointly created by CHENG Chih-chung, CHEN You-ru, HSIEN Chen-yi and AU Sow Yee who arranged and scripted it. The play is a synthesis of mythology, epics, journals, historical texts, novels, witchcraft and Malay poetry. The core role in the play is secret agent CHENG Chih-chung (Z is his code name in the script) who to begin with is lost in a nowhere place until he encounters Ayam Fared (code name A). The narration then unfolds in changing space-time, images, and relationships. A feature of the play is that the stage dialogue and script consist of quotations and rewritings from sources such as Yi-Dan House by CHANG Wen-huan (1909-1978), The Time in the East by Michiyo Mori (1901-1977), The Myth of Coconut Tree, and Miss Betel Nut by YU Da-fu (1896-1945), Captain Ripon's Maritime Adventure in the East Indies: The Diary of a Mercenary Soldier, 1617-1627, texts from books by writer HAN Suyin (1917-2012) and Learning Malay in 4 Weeks by Tokugawa Yoshichika (1886-1976).
