當爵士走入兩廳院 美國的爵士樂評曾說,爵士是一種民主的音樂:樂團當中輪流獨奏、彼此配合,而音樂中的即興演奏,更代表了允許個人創意發揮的自由。這種說法彰顯的不僅是一種追求自由的爵士風格,其中所透露出來的開放、尊重與和諧,更是藝術創作中不可或缺的重要精神。

2003年夏天,在國內爵士樂迷的引頸期盼下,兩廳院首次主動策劃【夏日爵士派對】,讓國家音樂廳在晶醇優雅的古典音樂之外,首度搖擺起狂放隨性的另類音樂風情。爵士樂登上藝術殿堂,打破了藝術與流行,精緻與通俗的疆界,宣告著藝術不再是高不可攀,娛樂也不只是媚俗流行;同時,亦展現了兩廳院在策展理念上,古典與當代,傳統與前衛的兼容並蓄,彷彿就和爵士樂一樣,擁有多元、融合的開放精神。

爵士樂從早期流傳在黑人中下階層社會的音樂,在20世紀初期一躍成為中產階級品味的象徵,隨著時代的變遷、文化的匯流,爵士樂的形式和風格越來越多,大樂隊搖擺、咆勃、酷派、硬式咆勃、自由、前衛、Bossa Nova、融合......,每個階段都在社會、經濟、政治等大環境的交相撞擊下,創造出許許多多不同的爵士樂特色。在台灣,近二十多年來,因為經濟快速成長,再加上西洋唱片工業的推波助瀾,爵士樂眾集了廣大的聽眾,甚至成為台灣社會大受歡迎的音樂形態:有的人愛爵士的即興,有的人聽到了爵士樂當中柔媚醉人的一面,有人感受到爵士樂不斷革新求變的創造力,有的人在爵士深厚的音樂傳統中挖掘皓首窮經。總之,無須正襟危坐,不用全神貫注,因為自由,爵士樂總是能輕易地走入大眾的生活裡。

然而以往,要享受爵士現場的熱情魅力,要親炙爵士大師的動人風采,總要往國外跑。現在,每年固定在仲夏登場的【兩廳院夏日爵士派對】為國內樂迷邀請到最具份量,名氣和音樂同樣響噹噹的超級爵士大師,讓聽眾親身感受爵士樂在舞台上與你心神交會,最神奇的一刻。邁入第五年的【兩廳院夏日爵士派對】,精挑細選四場全球最傳奇、頂尖的超級巨星演出。魅力橫掃全球的當代首席天后女伶「迪迪‧布里姬沃特」將在樂迷熱情安可聲中二度訪台;屹立樂壇三十年的不朽吉他手「派特‧馬堤諾」將帶來去年爵士百大專輯第一名的唱片【向蒙哥馬利致敬】經典曲目。「艾多‧羅曼諾三重奏」由歐洲一代鼓王艾多‧羅曼諾親自率領演出,團員個個身懷絕技,呈現跨越多種曲風的音樂風格。壓軸則是被樂評形容是佛瑞迪‧赫巴德之後最令人興奮的小號傳人「洛伊‧哈葛羅」。

不同於往年,今年除了精挑細選四場國外巨星演出外,也首次邀請國內爵士樂團一同加入派對,包括 GJO 搖擺爵士大樂團、啓彬&凱雅、黃瑞豐爵士五重奏等三組人馬。台灣的爵士樂手,是相當辛苦的一群,台灣少數的爵士演出現場僅能提供少量的酬勞和演出機會,但還是有不少樂手前仆後繼地投入爵士樂壇,他們的努力值得肯定,希望透過這次的演出,讓樂迷見證國內爵士樂手的實力,也讓他們擁有更寬廣的表演舞台。

此外,也要特別感謝台灣爵士 Mercedes-Benz,在兩廳院默默耕耘爵士音樂的第五年,給予實質的贊助和支持,相信今年【兩廳院夏日爵士派對】在與 Mercedes-Benz 的共同合作下,結合 The New C-Class「不安份的靈魂」主題呼應,共同為台灣的爵士樂欣賞環境創造注入更大的活力。 ── 兩廳院董事長 陳郁秀

 

Arrival of Jazz at NTCH American jazz critics once noted jazz as a democratic kind of music since band musicians take turns in performing solos, polyrhythms and jazz im-provisations, which have allowed individual musicians to freely express their musical talents.This not only emphasizes the pursuit for free expression of music that is characteristic of jazz music, the openness and respect for individuality displayed during its performance are the essential elements of creative musical masterpieces.

Heavily anticipated by jazz fans in Taiwan, National Theater & Concert Hall (NTCH) took the initiative to plan the very first “Summer Jazz Party”in the summer of 2003. This was the first time that wild funky jazz music entered the NTCH, which had entertained only the finely tuned sounds of classical music in the past. The arrival of jazz music at the palace of arts broke down the boundaries between exquisite arts and popular music. It symbolized that fine arts are no longer out of reach ,and that popular music no longer serves to only the general public. Meanwhile, this demonstrated the mixture of classical and contemporary"" traditional and avant-garde concepts that the NTCH management has in planning its developments.This concept is comparable to jazz music itself, for its diversity of cultures and the openness elements.

Jazz originated in the Black middle class and underprivileged community, and it was symbolic of the taste in music that middle class had acquired in the beginning of the 20th century. Jazz styles spread and influenced other styles as the times changed and cultures diversified, and the forms and styles of jazz consequently increased. With roots in West African and Western music, the jazz styles evolved into swing, bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, free jazz, avant-garde jazz﹐Bossa Nova and jazz fusion.

Due to fast economic growth in the past 20 years and the promotion of Western music by the music record industry in Taiwan﹐jazz has attracted many fans and has become a popular music genre among the general public. Some love jazz for its characteristic improvisations, some see the soft and gentle side of it﹐some admire the innovative element that the form allows, while others appreciate its enticing history that fascinates its fans to explore endlessly. Jazz easily wins the public ’s heart due to its characteristic free form that does not require close attention.

Jazz fans often had to go overseas in order to enjoy live jazz performances staged by international jazz musicians, but not anymore. The NTCH Summer Jazz Party will be hosted regularly for fans in Taiwan﹐inviting well-known masters of jazz whose on stage performances will be simply unforget-table.

Entering the fifth year of the annual NTCH Summer Jazz Party four legendary figures of jazz have been invited to perform this year. These top musicians include acclaimed jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, who will be returning to Taiwan after her last encore performance. Having been in the music industry for 30 years, modern jazz guitarist Pat Martino will be playing notes from his recording“Remember: A Tribute to Wes Montgomery"", which topped the JazzWeek Radio Chart in 2006. European free jazz drummer Aldo Romano will personally lead his talented band members in performing the Aldo Romano Trio. Also, being described as edging into the stylistic atmosphere once occupied by the former trumpet god, Freddie Hubbard, the highlight of the party is one of the most influential artists in jazz, American trumpeter Roy Hargrove.

Apart from the four international jazz musicians who were carefully selected by NTCH, Taiwanese jazz bands have been invited to join in the Party for the very first time. The three participating bands include Groovin' Jazz Orchestra, Chipin & Kaiya and Rich Huang Group. These jazz musicians have struggled in Taiwan, most of whom are paid the minimum wage with rare performance opportunities. Despite the hardship, many jazz musicians continue to dedicate their efforts in the jazz music industry and are certainly worthy of commendation. Fans will witness just how good these domestic jazz musicians are through this performance, allowing them more room on the stage.

Furthermore, we would like to especially thank the Taiwan Mercedes-Benz for sponsoring and supporting jazz music to be performed at NTCH for the fifth consecutive year. We believe that together with Mercedes-Benz, this year's NTCH Summer Jazz party will correspond to the theme of“restless souls"" of the new C-Class model, and will add vitality to jazz in Taiwan.
