一個伊斯坦堡的年輕皮影師父，繼承了一只已過世的老師父留下的箱子，皮箱裡裝著他生前收藏的珍寶。他在箱底發現了一尊古老的皮影戲偶，雕刻著工法極為精細的中國臉孔。這樣古老的皮影從何而來呢?他疑惑不解。
穿過遙域，時空的盡頭是古老的北京。在雜技團習藝的曉蘭，與皮影戲師傅毛毛相戀，但是曉蘭的父親執意將女兒許配給他人，命運的無奈橫亙在兩人之間。哀傷的毛毛將他的思念化刻為兩座仿真的皮影，一座是曉蘭，一座是他。在影戲的世界裡，生活彷彿變得輕盈，別離不懼。他將自己的皮影送給曉蘭，同時將曉蘭的皮影留在自己身邊。曉蘭抗拒父親安排的婚事，打算離開北京。她希望毛毛與她同行，卻未能如願。最後，帶著情人的皮影，她隻身踏上往西的旅程。
往西的旅程，難險孤寂。
毛毛刻給她的皮影，寄託了相隔的思念，而路途上的危難困阻，則全靠「大巴掌」來化解。
「大巴掌」原是毛毛身邊的皮影，負責掌管所有的小皮影，為了曉蘭，他一路護隨，走過絲路。最後，他們落腳在伊斯坦堡。一位年輕的雕刻家驚見曉蘭手中的皮影，如此精緻輕巧、前所未見。他反覆研究、興致盎然，並且試著揣摩，操作，訴說屬於自己的故事……。
時移物換，帶著古老皮影的伊斯坦堡師傅，終於走進了北京陳舊的胡同。胡同裡，沒人能解這座皮影的來歷，直至一個鶴髮蒼蒼的老人開了口。他說，這是個好久好久以前的故事了啊，是關於一段愛情，一對名喚曉蘭與毛毛的佳偶……
Shadow theatre was once the most creative forms Asian theatre, anything that could not be performed by actors could be performed by shadow puppets: firestorms, horse riding, dragons, magical animals etc. This ancient art was developed in China and India over 2000 years ago, yet in the 20th century it lost much of its appeal to television, film and the internet. The production Shadows of Love aims to re-introduce the unique art of shadow theatre in connection with modern forms of projection: film, photography and animation. The puppet theatre companies that produce the Shadows of Love together are from Beijing, Istanbul and Taipei. Istanbul and Beijing are closely related in the context of shadow theatre, because it is quite likely that the shadow theatre came to Turkey from China. The Taiyuan Puppet Theatre Company from Taipei was the creative force behind the creation of the story and the production. We wanted to introduce shadow theatre and some of its history in a modern play, linking both past and present, but avoiding that show would become a history class. We thus chose to write a love story that happens in Beijing and Istanbul and covers different eras. In the show the shadows represent eternity, because while human life is short, the shadows capture our love, desires and beautiful stories for generations to come. In order to stage a show like this a newly designed versatile moveable stage was developed to accommodate both multi-media and performances by actors and puppeteers.
