1937年基隆港邊的老舊餐旅店「高砂館」裡，旅店主人吳源等待遠赴滿州工作五年卻音訊全無的兒子木村，餐飲部經營者的女兒阿秀則等待著與木村一起去了滿州的情人國敏。每當霧笛聲響帶來大船入港的消息，無奈期待總是一再落空。面對竟日的等待與失落，他們儘管看不見未來，生活仍然在每日送往迎來、吵嚷嬉鬧中繼續......
台灣資深口述歷史劇團「歡喜扮戲團」 1995年為紀念終戰五十年，以口述歷史結合老照片重現日治時期、二次大戰前後台灣常民的生活經驗-【台灣告白歲月流轉50年】 2008年受國立中正文化中心【藝像台灣】系列節目之邀，將重新詮釋台灣劇場史上第一部舞台劇本，由前輩劇作家林搏秋發表於二次大戰期間的重要作品《高砂館》，由甫獲行政院客家委員會「客家貢獻獎」肯定的彭雅玲導演，邀集常與知名導演合作、活躍影視廣告的李秀、葉登源等《鹽巴與味素》原班人馬重返舞台，以經歌慢舞結合家族歷史的真實印證，點染林搏秋筆下台灣常民的人生悲喜圖，回首顧盼「高砂館」的風華歲月。
Irredeemably, time ticked away, Pushing far the fresh middle age. A hundred years concluded an era. Fumbling in the wind from the west, Forget not the blossom in the past. It was 1937, Keelung Harbor. In an old inn Gao Sha Guen, people wait and weep, stay and leave, struggling for hope and peace. Waiting for his son Mu-Tsun, who had been working in Manchukuo for five years, the owner of the inn Yuan Wu stayed in the town frustrated. The manager’s daughter A-Shiu, on the other hand, wept for her long gone lover Kuo-Min. Day after day, boat whistles brought hope first, but disappointment later. Yet life went on, so did the waiting in Gao Sha Guen... Eminent for the combination of oral history and theatre, the Uhan Shii Theatre Group in 1995, 50 years after the end of World War II, presented Echoes of Taiwan-Fifty Years in Taiwan, which focuses on Taiwan people’s life under Japanese rule. This year, commissioned by the National Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center, the company will stage Taiwan’s first theatrical script Gao Sha Guen, published during World War II by prominent playwright Lin Tuan-Chiu. With the same crew on Salt & MSG, director Ya-Ling Peng will visualize Taiwanese life in song and dance, displaying the joys and sorrows in Gao Sha Guen.
