宋真宗一朝，生下皇子的李宸妃原待母以子貴冊封為后，豈知奸妃劉氏與太監郭槐共謀，以剝皮斷尾的貍貓換掉李妃所生皇子，欲害其性命以奪后位。

奉命斬草除根的寇珠，不忍大宋皇脈就此斷送，於是與太監陳琳經過重重困難，終將太子平安送往八賢王處撫養，而劉妃封后之後卻一直沒有子嗣，真宗作主將八賢王的長子過繼給劉妃為子，即是後來即位的宋仁宗，劉妃萬萬想不到，自己視如己出的皇兒竟是當年她處心積慮要害死的太子。

寇珠不忍李妃長年悲痛，安排太子與軟禁在碧雲宮的生母李妃見面，豈知消息走露，劉妃因此挑撥陳寇兩人情誼，命陳琳拷打寇珠，逼兩人說出實情，陳琳為了保住太子，只好忍痛對寇珠下手，寇珠抵死不招，最後殉主而亡。

劉妃決定火燒碧雲宮以絕後患，宮女秀娘代主而亡，李妃方能逃出。聞訊趕來的陳琳，在大火中哭喊，最後以為李妃已死，抱著燒得不成人形的秀娘，痛哭失聲。逃出宮外的李妃與民間的義子范仲華相依為命，一日包拯奉命到陳州賑災，天意讓李妃終於遇上包拯，包拯答應李妃為其洗刷不白之冤。

包拯替郭槐祝壽，將之灌醉並招來寇珠鬼魂訴冤，嚇得郭槐說出當年實情，隔簾聽審的仁宗大怒，命人將郭槐五馬分屍後，卻陷入深沉的悲愁當中，原來劉妃與他早已培養出深厚的母子感情，天性至孝的仁宗竟然不管後世青史議論，哭著要將養母救出宮去，劉妃不忍陷仁宗於不義，服藥自盡以全母子之情，仁宗抱著養母，失聲痛哭。

仁宗喜迎生母李妃回宮，重敘天倫之樂，宋室秘史，千古傳唱，感人至深。

The synopsis of Dan Shin Jiou Ju (A Life for the Master) is based on the traditional repertoire Raccoon for a Prince, a legend from the Song Dynasty. The emperor Jenzong, in his eagerness to have an heir, made an announcement that the first of his wives who gave birth to a son would be made the empress. When Lifei delivered a baby boy, the wicked Liufei who was the most ambitious one of Jenzong's wives, with the head eunuch Guohuai being the partner of her conspiracy, concocted a plot switching the baby boy with a raccoon. They ordered Kouju the maid to kill the baby; however, she sneaked the baby prince out of the palace and sent him to his uncle's place.

Liufei garnered the title of the empress after Lifei was prisoned. Becaue she kept being barren, Jenzong adopted his brother's eldest son as his heir, who was actually his blood. Kouju, who sympathized with the misfortune of Lifei, secretly made the arrangement for the prince to meet Lifei without revealing their relationship. However Liufei became suspicious when the prince returned to her palace unhappily. She tortured Kouju, hoping the latter will spill out the secret. The loyal Kouju was martyrized without leaking the secret about the prince's identity.

Making up her mind to kill Lifei, Liufei sent servants to set fire to the place where Lifei was prisoned. Lifei 's maid Shiouliang sacrificed her life to save her mistress.

After her lucky escape, Lifei was taken care of by her foster son Fang Junghua. One day, Lifei encountered Baugung, the wisest minister at the time. He believed Lifei's story after she talked to him and made a plan to trick Guohuai to confess his sin. Guohuai was sentenced to death when Renzong, Lifei's son who had already succeeded the throne, heard about the truth. But Renzong could not find a solution for Liufei's punishment; after all she raised him up. In order to make Renzong's life easier, Liufei committed suicide. Although he grieved for his foster mother's death,it was a relief for him. Lifei was ushered back and happily lived with her son for the rest of her life.
