關於此劇 《希茲威班西死了》是亞朵‧佛佳德與約翰‧卡尼及溫斯頓‧恩修納共同創作的《Statement plays》三部曲當中的第二部，而據了解，這些作品皆出自於《Township plays》 ( 1958~1973 ) ，當中的故事都取材自當年南非黑人的都會日常生活。而本劇則由一連串的真實生活經驗建構而成。故事的一開始是史岱爾的獨白，這個角色敘述著他從前在福特公司工作的種種，包括自己對於老闆是如何的順從，也包括自己對於獨立生活的夢想。憑藉著這份夢想，他後來買下了一家照相館，他認為上門的客戶都可以藉由照相實現夢想，儘管那份夢想只有短暫的片刻。史岱爾獨白進行的同時，來了一名客人要求照相，此人名叫羅伯，過了一會兒他才發現，原來此人也叫作希茲威班西，是劇中的另一位英雄。為了求職，羅伯借用了一個死人的身份，而借用新身份的這個舉動，迫使班西面臨到更深層的衝突：除了姓名、個性、家人、社交經歷都得改變，他也體認到一旦作了決定便無法挽回。本劇體現了角色身份所受到的政治性壓迫，其所關注的主題涵括身份認同、人性價值、事質真偽以及爭取生存。
About the Play Sizwe Banzi Is Dead is the second out of the three Statement plays Fugard created with John Kani and Winston Ntshona. These plays are considered to be part of the Township plays (1958~1973), which were based on everyday life of the urban black community in South Africa during that period. The play is built out of a series of real experiences. The play starts with a monologue in which Styles, the first character relates the story of the days in which he worked at a Ford company, on his obedience to his white boss and his dreams of an independent life. This dream led him to purchase a photography shop, in which according to him, his clients can live out their dreams if only for a short moment. In the meantime a client appears, Robert, who asks for his picture to be taken. It turns out that Robert is also Siswe Banzi- the other hero of the play. His dreams of finding work have led him to adopt a dead man's identity. In adopting this new identity, Banzi is forced to confront the deeper meaning of this action- the changing of his name, his personal, family and social history and also the knowledge that the decision is irrevocable. The play reveals the role of theater in a political situation of repression, focusing on themes connected with identity, humanity, truth, and survival.
