Celebrated as “a flawless comedy”, The Importance of Being Earnest was written by Victoian playwright Oscar Wilde in 1894. It received immediate attention on its premiere night next year at St. Jame’s Theatre, London. Marking the peak of the playwright’s career, the highly-praised play ridicules the pretentious lifestyle of Victorian nobles. Wilde was able to amuse and mock the upper class audience simultaneously without them realizing that, putting to great use his humorous wit and command of words and rhetoric techniques. Many of Wilde’s works manifest the essence of Aestheticism, greatly influencing the development of literature and drama in the 20th century. His theater works often reflect the life of his time. The daring writer examined it, satirized it, and was unafraid to lay bare the truth. Such character enchanted his audience. In 1990, well-established director Daneil S.P. Yang was invited by the New Aspect Cultural and Educational Foundation to produce The Importance of Being Earnest, his first collaboration with Taiwan’s cast members. A total of eleven performances proved a great success. The seats of the National Theatre Hall were occupied, and the audience responded fervently. Two decades after its premiere in Taiwan, the comedy masterpiece is to be produced again this year, as New Aspect reinvited Dr. Yang as director, joined by a group of popular TV actors, starring world-known superstar Lisa Lu as Lady Bragnell. Such strong cast is sure to give the audience a wonderful viewing experience.
