故事坐落在美國，「概念上」的康乃狄克州，一幢裡裡外外淨是白色的房子。房子的女主人藍妮是一位醫生，她雇用了一名來自巴西的女孩瑪諦達為她清掃居所；然而，比起清潔工作，這名女傭對於怎樣才能構思出一個「全世界最棒的笑話」更感興趣。她認為打掃會成為創作笑話時的阻礙，因為一個好笑話應該是「髒」的，若笑話乾乾淨淨的還有什麼好笑？另一方面，藍妮的姊姊維吉妮亞是個全職的家庭主婦，當她在家獨處時，只能藉由不斷做家事來釐清腦中混亂的思緒。「親自動手打理環境」變成一種證明自我價值的方式，在她心底甚至成為自己稍能贏過向來表現優異的妹妹之處。 從這些女人價值觀各異的撞擊當中，迸出了全劇最主要的情節，即男主人查理斯的外遇事件。他的新對象安娜是一個充滿生命熱力的阿根廷女子，照理來說出軌的行為無論如何都令人難以原諒，可是這個第三者卻教人無法不發自內心地喜歡她。這對年齡相加起來超過一百歲的戀人瘋狂地陷入愛河，在他們年輕的眼睛裡，視彼此為彼此的「靈魂伴侶」。安娜的出現帶給整個家截然不同的氣氛，她彷彿在這個白色的空間中恣意作畫，揮灑出各式各樣的色彩，使每一個人都開始重新思考關於生命、歡笑與愛的意義。
Story sets in a white house located at conceptual Connecticut, America. The hostess Lane, also known as a doctor, hires Matilde, a Brazilian to clean her house. However, Matilde concerns more about telling the best joke of the world than cleaning. Matilde thinks that her job is an obstacle to her joke, since a good joke should be dirty, not clean. On the other hand, Lane's sister, Virginia, a full-time housewife, depends on cleaning to clear her mind when being at home alone. "Clean up the house after herself" becomes Virginia's core value of life and even a way to prove that she can surpass her outstanding sister. From the complex between each female character's point of view, embeds into the main plot of the story—the affair between Charles, Lane's husband, and Ana, the enthusiastic Argentine. Affair, no matter under what kinds of situation, should not be forgiven, but no one can ever resist to the lovely Ana. Charles and Ana, this middle-aged couple, see the other as Bashert (soul mate) through their revived eyes. Ana brought the whole new atmosphere to this house. Her free spirit colors this simply white house, making everyone to reconsider the meaning of life, laughter and love.
