RUSSIAN FOLK MUSIC ENSEMBLE "LlGHT DAY" was born in 1989 by the initiative of students of Gnessin's State Musical Pedagogical Institute in Moscow, the most famous high music college. The ensemble "Light Day" is a young and unique company of gifted musicians. AII of them share the same sublime and noble feature. They strive to revive the genuine traditions of ancient Russian ensembles of the 10the century. It is common knowledge that in the period of old Russia the ensembles of folk instruments not only performed musical compositions and accompanied the soloists but at the same time were small folk theatres. That is why the performers of the ensemble by their creative activity try to bring home the idea that a musician should combine the following qualities:be able to move professionaly about the stage and do his best to present every musical piece in the most emotional and artistic way possible. These young musicians--their average age is 24--think that Russian en-semble's repertoire should be a versatile one. It is due to this fact that their concerts are marked by versatility of style and the dynamics. Their solo concert consists of two parts, each lasts 45 minutes. They perform the first one in tailcoats. Pieces of west and Russian classics are included:Bach, Mozart, Paganini, Strauss, Liadov, etc. Classic jazz, being performed on Russian folk instruments, sounds rather peculiar and seems to be born second time. Popular songs and melodies of different countries are also included. The second part seems to be a real Russian show. AII its items are organically interconnected and present a single musical show. The diamond of this group of enthusiasts-professionals is the soloistH ELEN VERHOVSKAYA. Her sensitive and charming voice possesses the thrilling power that reveals the mysteries and legends of old Russia and revives the images of ancient spirits. She turns out to be a singer, but an actress as well. In addition to the lively and joyful Russian songs and ancient ballades of old Russia, she is good at performing songs in any language let it be English or Turkish. The American daily Denver Post called her "Russian Pearl." VALERY SEMIN, an interesting and controversial musician-arranger, ac-cordion player, and AII Russian prize-winner, is the leader of the ensemble. On stage he appears to be a true professional, playing his instrument in such a way that the audience is profoundly moved. On top of it, he conducted all the concerts with flying colors. Many Americans were heard to say that if he were not a Russian musician he would successfully substitute a famous American comic actor named John Belushi. The players of the band are bright individualities. AII Russian prize-winner ALEXANDER IZUMSKY is the best of young Russian balalaika player. He is known to play his balalaika the way Pagnini plays his violin. It is worth mentioning that the 24th caprice of Nicolo Paganini is in his solo program. The performance of it on an ancient Russian balalaika is a rare treat. There is one more AII Russian prize winner VLADIMIR PAK (dom ra player). A Korean by origin, he was born and broght up in Russia. He moves with the ease of a panther. The moment he goes dancing after a masterly run the audience bursts into applause. The most charming man in the ensemble is ALEXANDER IVANOV (accordion player). He is very emotional and feels music deeply. His look wouldn't leave a woman in the hall unmoved. The ensemble in question is a multinational one. IAKOV EIGOF is German by origin. He is rather com-posed, reserved and' punctual in ever-day Iife. These qulities determine his stage image. lakov is a brilliant musician who plays domra and percussion instruments as well. One can't imagine the band without two-metre basbalalaika player ALEKSEI NOVOKOV. Imperturbable both in life and on stage, he happily completes this multifacet and united ensemble of Russian folk musicians. The ensemble is prize-winner of the first International Competition of Entertaining Programs in Moscow (1991), prize-winner of the 16th Inter-national Folk Festival in Turkey (1990). During the two years of its existence the ensemble has toured extensively both in Russia and abroad:Finland, Turkey,Mongolia, USA, Czechoslovakia, etc. The AII-Union TV and Radio have made records of their performances, and now the music firm "Melodia" is working on the LP with the best pieces from their repertoire. AII the performers of the ensemble are young and full of energy, andand their wish is to introduce Russian folk music to the listeners of all over the world and to give them a powerful impact of joy and vigour.
