鄭三桂是褔全中藥行的老闆，在他的店裡的窗台上擺放一座閹雞的木雕。這家中藥店在三桂父親健在時期生意相當興盛，但到了三桂這一代卻逐漸蕭條，除了是因西藥房一家家開設外，最主要的原因是就是三桂為人非常吝嗇刻薄。
三桂的遠親林清標在隔壁村正經營貨運行，清標的興趣原是學醫，卻因父母反對，只好留在家中經營祖業，但清標還是利用閒暇研究漢醫書籍。由於有消息說鐵路將會延伸到清標所住的村莊，於是三桂便試圖想以自己的中藥行來和清標交換土地，以獲取暴利，同時，也積極籌辦自己兒子阿勇和清標女兒月里的婚事。
當月裡嫁給阿勇後，三桂也在清標原來的土地上蓋了幾棟新房子，就在房子即將完工時，突然傳來鐵路延伸取消的消息，三桂受此打擊，煩惱至死。阿勇本以為父親留有財產，結果卻不然，反倒是因蓋房子到處借貸。全家後來因為債務纏身，慘遭法院拍賣房屋，煩惱不己的阿勇最後也辭掉鄉公所的工作，回家幫忙月里種田養豬。緊接著，阿勇的母親也相繼過世。不習慣耕種的阿勇，每天勞碌不堪，最後竟染上瘧疾臥病在床，家庭經濟重擔從此由月里一肩扛起。
月里到處打零工貼補家用，最後來到李懷家中幫傭，不久後因與李懷跛腳的畫家兒子李凜情趣相投，便開始幽會。當他們這段不可告人的戀情最後被李凜的老婆發現後，兩人為了能夠永遠在一起而選擇投潭殉情而死。
On the windowsill of San-Guei Zheng's Chinese herb store, there stands a wooden sculpture-a castrated chicken. This store used to thrive in the past, but its business started to decline when San-Guei took over, mainly because of San-Guei's acrimonious temper.
Ching-Biao Lin, a distant relative of San-Guei, runs a freight company in the neighboring village. At that time, there is speculation over the railway's possible extension to Ching-Biao's village, which means a chance of overnight fortune. San-Gue attempts to exchange his herb store for Ching-Biao's land; he also actively promotes the marriage of his son, A-Yung, to Ching-Biao's daughter, Yue-Li.
After Yue-Li married A-Yung, San-Guei starts to build new houses on his newly-obtained land. However, just before the completion of these houses, some unfortunate news is broken to San-Guei- the railway's extension plan has been called off-a terrible strike for San-Guei that leads to his death. After San-Guei died, A-Yung expected to receive some heritance from his father, but instead, what await him are merely piles of debts. Following San-Guei's death, A-Yung's mother died, and A-Yung falls sick out of fatigue. The financial burden is now entirely placed on Yue-Li's shoulders.
Yue-Li does odd jobs to support the family; while working for Huai Li's family, she meets his son, Lin Li, a crippled painter, and falls in love with him. Their secret love affair is discovered by Lin Li's wife. Without any other choice, they choose to commit suicide by throwing themselves into a deep pool.
