THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER 2.0 has been one of Jan Martens’ most important works to date. A decade later, in 2025, Martens and GRIP are recreating it with a new cast. Martens was inspired by a quote attributed to American photographer Philippe Halsman: “When you ask a person to jump, his attention is mostly directed toward the act of jumping and the mask falls so that the real person appears.” Martens seeks to expose the person within each dancer through sustained jumping. A cast of eight dancers strives for perfection but, due to the complex, mathematical, vigorous, and exhausting choreography, ultimately slips up, and the masks fall. Audiences are no longer merely observers subjected to an experience but actively begin to reflect on it, contemplating their compassion for the dancers and the line between art and entertainment.
