Maataw: the Floating Island is the newest theatrical production commissioned by the Council of Indigenous Peoples. It is based on the Yami/ Tao vocabulary, which combines the root of ataw, ‘the ocean’ with the prefix of ma-. Maataw could imply any island seen from the ocean in the Yami/Tao people's culture, who have been living on a remote island, Botel Tobago or Lanyu, off the south-eastern coast of Taiwan. The theatrical work produced by the Formosan Aboriginal Song and Dance Troupe in 2016, however, presents the contemporary dialogue between Islands of raiwan and Lanyu, as reflected through encounters between insiders and outsiders, tradition and the modern, tribe and nation, etc. The work is composed of the following sections: Prelude A traditional lullaby is sung by a female Yami/ Tao to open the curtain. The mother nurtures the baby, just as the ocean does to the island. Maataw, the floating island, has different images for different groups of peoples. Mivanwa “Calling the flying fish” Currents from the ocean come to the island all the time. They bring the flying fish, as well as tourists. After the ritual of “calling the flying fish,” elders sighed because of gradual destruction of nature and environment. Mivaci “Pounding the millet” The Yami/ Tao women's hair dance pictures the waves, while the men's dance of pounding rice accumulates force. Both traditional practices attract constant gazes from the outsiders, gazes of curiosity and exoticism. Mikaryag "Singing Gathering The Yami/ Tao traditionally sing to work and sing to worship. They strive to find their original sound among various contemporary singing cultures that had been brought into the Island. Manawey “Spirit Up” Facing the external impact, the Yami/ Tao people finally have to fight to resist the oppression. They fall and rise, fall and rise, until they stand strong enough for their right of existence
