Bernard-Marie Koltès: La nuit juste avant les forêts, was inspired by La nuit juste avant les forêts by the French playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès. Written in 1977, at the end of the French social and economic height, the whiff of the looming financial crisis could already be faintly caught in the air. This stage work of Koltès features a young man, perhaps an immigrant worker in France, whom from between the lines of the sixty-three- pages long monologue play no further elaboration or explanation is provided. The origin of story is a worker's hearsay: An armed soldier lays in wait in the forest and shoots randomly at any slightest sign of movement. Journeying through this forest is extremely dangerous, let alone at night. On the basis of this metaphor, Koltès wrote of the struggles of immigrant workers to survive on the lowest rung of French society, intending to penetrate the mentality and atmosphere under the urban high-stress environment, and expose the reality crisis of the contemporary society. Forty years on, in 2017, the National Theater and Concert Hall (NTCH) has just completed its renovation and presents annual Innovative Series. Koltès: La nuit juste avant les forêts was bound to be created at this time and place.
