偉大作曲家的每一次創作,都是重新審視自己,在大環境的藩籬下,試圖掙脫既定規範,奮力開創新局的心路歷程。雖然他們所面對的創作問題,使用之音樂語言,因個人時代而異,但本質精神是互通的。 海頓卑躬屈膝於恩主庇蔭下,孜孜不倦地在104首交響創作中,一步一腳印的試驗、累積,成就了西歐交響曲顛撲不破的古典基石。 莫札特穿梭於教會宮廷,杯觥交錯的宴會中,須以各種不同形式 (嬉戲曲,小夜曲,交響曲 ) 「取悅」庸碌喧嘩的王公貴族,卻也一次次的為自己實現心中的真理追尋。 貝多芬以革命性的創念,不斷猛烈撼動與封建氛圍息息相關的古典音樂語彙:優雅,均衡,打造了九座無人能逾越的交響里程碑。 百年後,同樣在維也納,荀貝格 (Arnold Schonberg﹐1874-1951 )皺眉面對的是後期浪漫主義已氾濫成災的調性擴張。我們看史特勞斯的《莎樂美》、《艾蕾克特拉》,馬勒的晚期作品…等,為表達個人濃烈的情感及想像力,挾帶世紀末的不安、徬徨與新世代的蓄勢待發,已將古典浪漫所有語彙七十二變般的渲染到令人膛目結舌,卻也不可收拾的境地。不少作品 (如《艾蕾克特拉》,馬勒第十號交響曲 )早已徘徊於打破調性禁忌的門檻上。 帶著一點知性的好奇,探險的精神及一些歷史脈絡的認知,相信大家能從聆樂中為自己開一扇窗,這也是我將200年中活躍於音樂之都維也納的各代偉大作曲家齊聚一堂,時代交錯,同台呈現的用心。無論是貝多芬的《命運》,布魯克納的《浪漫》,布拉姆斯、荀貝格、莫札特、魏本、海頓...讓我們拋開約定俗成,以第一次接觸的新鮮與好奇,去感受,反思及還原這些歷史傑作的原創精神。

Every work of a great composer is a form of self-reflection. The creative spirit and essences of each composer share a universality that transcends differences in time and places. Vienna, the sacred temple of Classical Music, witnessed prestigious composers setting foundations and progressions of Western music history: Haydn, a prolific yet pious and humble composer in service to his lordly patron laid the cornerstone of Western European symphonic music with the purest of classical forms with his 104 symphonic works in his step by step experimentation. Mozart﹐ wove his life from church to court in his more multifaceted life, composed creatively for a broader and more varied audience, with different genres including serenades, opera buffa, as well as symphonic work. Pleasing not only the noblemen but also giving vent to his inner music. Beethoven, with his revolutionary spirit, explored and pushed the very limit of traditional classical forms, as best exemplified in his nine peerless symphonies. One hundred years later, Arnold Schonberg (1874-1951) used Vienna as a musical base from which to explode the strictures of tonality, and in so doing drove the final nail into the coffin of post-romanticism. With a bit of curiosity, an adventurous musical spirit and some knowledge of history our audiences will, I hope, let open a new window. And it is also why I will gather the great composers of Vienna on one stage. Whether it is Beethoven's Fifth, Bruckner's Romance, Brahms, Schonberg, Mozart, Webern or Haydn…let's transcend our preconceived notions of musical form, and experience as if for the first time, and feel the essence and spirit of these magnificent original masterworks.
