The human voice, the most basic of musical instruments, constantly evolves with the passage of time and the growth of human languages and communities. It has enriched different peoples immeasurably. But the human voice is something that is carried within ourselves and can be “played" anytime, anywhere. As such, it is a best means by which mass participation can be achieved.
Granted that we should try to make cultural activities, resources and development a common responsibility lor all citizens, we will find the human voice an important means by which the cultural rights of citizenry are realized The current Taipei International Choral Music Festival, a biennial event, is the fifth in succession. The Taipei Philharmonic Foundationlor Culture and Education has spared no effort in organizing it, arranging choral singing workshops, conducting workshops, speeches, and seminars in connection with the main event.
It has invited choirs Irom Norway,Australia,Venezuela, South Korea, and Indonesia to perform in nearly 20 indoor and open-air concerts across the count吋 In this way, audiences can enjoy world-class music in their home αties, while participating choirs can benefit by each other's art For music lovers, this should be the best musical treat in the summer heat “Chorus," a 17.-Century word, means a group of persons singing in unison. Performed mostly in concerts, it has become a highly popular genre among both the well versed and the lay. In Taiwan, choral singing is inseparable lrom the island's aboriginallanguages, religions, beliels, sacrifiαal rites, mythology, romantic love, dancing, work, and clans, giving voice to their leelings and philosophies. The Bunun Tribe's "Pasipotpot," an eight-part male-voice choral prayer lor bumper harvests, has long become a classic in ethnical music The art of choral singing keeps developing, bringing about a steady stream of innovations. It simply epitomizes the beauty of the human voice.
Music transcends interpersonal distance, time, space, and national and ethnical boundaries and soothes the heart. People Irom all walks of lile are welcome to participate in the Taipei International Choral Music Festival. 1would like to take this opportunity to thank TPFCE and others lor their hard work, and 1am gratelul to the participating local and foreign artists and those who have given their support. 1wish the event every success.
