歌仔戲劇本《黃虎印》，是由施如芳小姐將我的台灣歷史小說【台灣七色記】中的《黃虎印》一書改編而成。《黃虎印》小說是我在公元1982年於台灣警備總部軍事監牢中所寫作的。
《黃虎印》寫的是公元1895年台灣組織「台灣民主國」的故事。日本帝國與大清帝國於公元1894年 ( 歲次甲午 ) 在朝鮮半島發生戰爭 ( 史稱「甲午戰爭」 ) ，第二年日清簽訂「馬關條約」，將台灣澎湖割讓給日本帝國。台灣士紳不滿割台，籌組「台灣民主國」，後日本軍隊登陸入台， 民主國軍隊不敵， 不久台灣為日本所佔。
《黃虎印》是這個短命「台灣民主國」的國印。「台灣民主國」以黃虎旗為國旗，故稱國印為「黃虎印」。
小說即以此黃虎金印之鑄製及輾轉流落，來描述乙末年 ( 公元1895年 ) 台灣民主國抗日之經過及當時之民情。故事安排此金印被埋入深坑礦穴，一方面表示民主思想深藏不失，一方面表示民主國之創設終有一日出現。
用黃金國印來象徵「民主國」及「民主」兩項觀念，至於那些為金印犧牲生命護衛保全的英雄烈士，就是我們所尊敬的民主建國勇士了。我因參加台灣民主運動而被捕入牢， 牢中辛苦，但未易初志，對先人追求民主之決心與辛苦，更能體會。寫《黃虎印》時，我自己投入很多心血與感情，這本小說，確是用鮮血與淚珠寫成的。
劇本能夠順利完成出版，終於完成我的一項心願，頗感欣慰，感謝編劇施如芳小姐。今日本劇由唐美雲歌仔戲團演出，更是加分，必定精彩可期！
Foreword by Chia-Wen Yao The Taiwanese Opera The Seal of 1895 is adapted from one of the series of my history novels, Seven Colors of Taiwan, which I completed in the military prison in Taiwan Garrison Command back in 1982. The Seal of 1895 tells the story about the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Taiwan. In 1895, Taiwan and Penghu were ceded to Japan in the Treaty of Shimonoseki. The local gentry of Taiwan established the Democratic Republic of Taiwan, hoping to resist the invasion of Japan. However, the republic soon collapsed and Taiwan was taken by Japan. Huang Hu In is the seal of this short-lived government. The national flag of the Democratic Republic of Taiwan depicts a picture of a yellow tiger (“huang hu”); therefore, the official seal of this government is called Huang Hu In. The seal is arranged to be buried in a pit in the end, indicating the democratic values are not lost and will be recovered one day. The golden seal symbolizes the ideas of “democratic republic” and “democracy; ” those who sacrificed their lives to protect the seal should be considered our national martyrs. I myself have been put to jail for participating in Taiwan’s democratic activities. In those days, I realized the difficulties our ancestors had gone through to seek freedom and democracy. I put every effort in writing this novel; it is literally written in blood and tears. I wish to acknowledge the efforts of the playwright, Ms. Ru-Fang Shih and Tang Mei Yun Taiwanese Opera Company, and I earnestly look forward to the upcoming performance.
