Patti Austin Patti Austin’s ability to move deftly through a diverse range of musical material - from pop and soul to jazz and standards as a renowned global performer and Grammy award-winning recording artist has earned her the respect and admiration of her peers and audiences the world over. Celebrating an incredible five decades of music-making - given she got her first record deal at the age of five - the native New Yorker has created an amazing legacy of work that covers close to twenty albums. Austin, the daughter of jazz trombonist Gordon Austin and goddaughter of musical legends Jones and Dinah Washington, made her stage debut with Washington at the world-famous Apollo Theater in Harlem. During the 70s she was the undisputed "queen" of the New York session scene; her voice was heard behind everyone from Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, James Brown and Joe Cocker to Bette Midler, Roberta Flack, Luther Vandross and Diana Ross and on countless memorable commercial jingles. After building a solid reputation for herself as an international hitmaker in the ‘80s, thanks to the Grammy-nominated hit "Baby Come To Me," her now classic duet with James Ingram and the follow-up duet, the Oscar-nominated "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" - both produced by her godfather Quincy Jones - Patti began turning her attention to three of the architects of the Great American Songbook, Ella Fitzgerald, George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. Kicking off this amazing trilogy created by Patti in tribute to three timeless musical pioneers is For Ella, a thirteen-track tour-de-force album recorded live in 2001 with the WDR Big Band and Orchestra and the Gregg Field Rhythm Section at the Koln Philharmonic Hall. Released in 2003, For Ella garnered rave reviews and a Grammy nomination, opening the door for Patti to perform what has become essentially a one-woman show complete with dialog during which she shares both about Fitzgerald’s life and her own musical journey. The result has been a constant schedule of shows across the globe with Patti’s deft interpretations of the great vocalist’s work garnering praise from press and audiences alike. Originally Patti spent two months listening to Ella’s catalog and was instantly reminded of the singer’s sheer artistry: “Once I started preparing for the album, people would flow into my life that had worked with her… What I realized was that, once she hit the stage, she sang like her life depended on it. Her vocal licks were so finite, she had such incredible technique, such mastery…”
