凡尼亞原本和桑妮亞(亡姊之女)、母親、朋友們在亡姊的遺產地過著平靜的農莊生活。教授(亡姊之夫)和其第二任妻子艾蓮娜的返鄉卻打亂了他們的日常生活。劇中幾乎所有角色都不快樂:阿斯托夫醫生，一個走在時代前端的環境保護者，一個只為照顧病人和森林而活的男人;苦苦單戀醫生的桑妮亞;順從暴君丈夫的艾蓮娜...當然還有凡尼亞。
凡尼亞對年輕貌美的艾蓮娜心生情愫。他回顧了自己的人生，只看見自己放棄了人生以便成全姊夫的榮耀名聲，讓姊夫代替他享受人生。平凡的生命，渴望沒有過的快樂。
在本劇中，導演侯多夫˙達納創造了親近觀眾的演出場域。觀眾入場後首先被邀請取用開胃菜與伏特加，接著再入座，被觀眾席圍繞的演出區域中央是一張長桌。燈光變換，入場時的服務生一個轉身，便變成劇中人物。兩個小時的演出非常貼近我們。開場時，他們的瘋狂失眠襲擊著我們的神經，我們好似見證了這些角色心底疑問。結尾時，我們發現他們隱藏在心底的愛，我們感到悲喜交加，卻不禁質疑他們的人生抉擇。
Uncle Vanya lives in the countryside, the estate of his late sister, with his mother, his niece and some friends. The arrival of his brother-in-law and the man's wife disrupts the daily lives of everyone. Almost all the characters in this play are dissatisfied with life, doctor Astrov, an environmentalism before his time , who lives only for his patients and forests; Sonia with her unanswered love; Elena the obedient wife; Serebryakov the domestic tyrant; and of course Uncle Vanya. Vanya discovers his love to his young beautiful sister-in-law; he takes review of his life, only to find a story of a man who has lived his life by proxy, living for the fame of his brother-in-law... The story of mundane lives of characters who have missed the happiness. For Oncle Vania, the director Rodolphe Dana worked on a device close to the public. The audience entering the room is first invited to the buffet, where the vodka and appetizers await. Then they are seated on three sides of the performance space, with a long table at the center. The servers are transformal into actors: we are left with two hours of representation intimate to the audience. At the outset, we are struck by the feverish insomnia which seizes the household,as if we are living in the questions in these characters' hearts. The result is a tragicomic discovery of the love latent in some people, but also questioning others' life choices.
