根據古希臘悲劇家尤里庇底斯的《酒神女信徒》創作而成的《酒神》，主要是描述酒神狄奧尼修斯與底比斯王彭提烏之間的衝突。舞台上，狄奧尼修斯為了懲罰底比斯王彭提鳥拒絕承認他為神祇，不但將彭提烏迷住，更迷惑底比斯婦女及彭提鳥的母親阿嘉妃，成了他狂熱的信徒，以致彭提烏遭那些發狂的信徒撕成碎片，難逃一死......。
Suzuki’s Dionysus is based on The Bacchae , the playwright of ancient Greek tragedian Euripides, which adopts the myth depicting the King of Thebes Pentheus’ confrontation against Dionysus. In the play, Dionysus, who is enraged by Pentheus’ refusal to worship him as a god, casts a spell on all the women in town -including Pentheus’ mother Agave -and they gather to celebrate in a party. Pentheus, when he follows those frenzied females, is unfortunately mistaken for a lion and has been ripped limb from limb in a fit of blood lust.
