CHEN Mao-shuen (1936-2023), a descendant of Han Chinese who grew up by the Watermoon Temple, became the first Taiwanese child in Beigang to own a piano because of his father's enthusiasm for Western music. He was once a "music deserter," refusing to apply for college music school, and he was considered a potential "Taiwan independence instigator" during the White Terror. These forces from his family and the society prompted him to develop the unique compositional approach of "telling the Eastern connotation through the framework of Western music" and to promote "Taiwanized music education." He eventually became a leading figure in composition and music education in 20th-century Taiwan and won the prestigious National Award for Arts.
Weiwuying has been the proud host of the "Taiwanese Composers Series" Exhibition for several years now, and it continues this tradition with this year's spotlight on CHEN Mao-shuen. The exhibition delves into the rich cultural heritage that nurtured CHEN's "East-West fusion" musical perspective, drawing insights from the historical relics of the Chen family. Furthermore, it explores the profound influence of Taiwan's political transformations on the development of CHEN's creative works and educational ideologies, as seen through his life story.
