The four-act ballet is based on a book by Nicolai Volkov. Giselle-2nd Act Pas de Deux Perform: Yumiko Takeshima / Raphael Coumes-Marquet Choreography: David Dawson The Original choregraphy by Jean Coralli / Jules Perrot Music: Adolphe Adam World Premiere: March 9 2008, Saxon State Opera Dresden -Semperoper Taipei Premiere: 22 August 2009 The original ballet premiered on 28 June 1841 This ballet-story takes place in a humble village where Giselle, a peasant girl, is in love with a nobleman in disguise named Albrecht. She rejects the love of another peasant, Hilarion, whose jealousy contributes to the suspense and drama in the first act,. Albrecht swears his love for Giselle and the two dance joyously, later, When Giselle learns that Albrecht is engaged to be married to the duke's daughter, she dies of a broken heart. The second act takes place in the eerie woodland inhabited by the Wilis, spirits of young girls who have been jilted and died before their wedding day. A sorrowful Albrecht enters. But any mortal who invades this supernatural domain is doomed to death. The Wilis attempt to dance Albrecht to the point of exhaustion, but Giselle intercedes, and saves the prince's life. In the Middle, lacking in any external effects, is concentrated in the traditional formula theme and variations. The main theme, danced by the ballerina, increases progressively in relation with the number of dancers, until the result of the group becomes much more complex variations and pas de deux. The pretended disdain of the dancers contrasts with the strict and severe technical demands.
