故事描寫女主角葉瑪聽從父親的安排和璜結婚。婚後，她一直希望能有個孩子，卻無法懷有身孕。璜每日埋首於工作，想要安定的生活﹒對於葉瑪的心願，璜從不予理會，只在意村民對她和舊情人維多之間的閒語﹒葉瑪得知朋友瑪麗亞懷孕後，羨慕不已，她開始懷疑自己，和璜產生分歧。心急的葉瑪想尋求幫助，找上了多洛蕾。 面對世俗的眼光、丈夫的冷漠與自己的渴求，使葉瑪逐漸走向瘋狂......
The story describes the heroine Yerma, who obeyed her father's arrangement and married Juan. After her marriage, she always wanted to have a child, but she could not be pregnant. Juan was immersed in his daily work and wanted merely to lead a stable life, taking no heed of Yerma's wish but of the gossips in the village about Yerma and her old flame, Victor. When Yerma heard about the pregnancy of her friend, Maria, she was more than envious, and began to have doubts about herself and thus had disagreements with Juan. In desperation, Yerma turned to Dolores for help. Facing the mundane views, the indifference of her husband and her own desires, Yerma gradually stepped into the state of madness...
