1985年寫作、1986年出版、1987年首演的《在棉花田的孤寂》是戈爾德思留給世界劇壇最獨特體裁的驚世傑作，兩個不具名的角色:商人與顧客，從各自陳述充滿新古典文體的哲學性辯證獨白開始，繁複深邃的台詞迴繞在無窮無盡的慾望狀態的描述，戲劇動作看似模糊，劇情敘事更是近乎不存在的稀薄，惟有越接近尾聲，兩人對峙交鋒方才愈形緊密而且暴烈，語言的纏鬥終於轉化成行為的逆襲-「沒有規則，只有策略，只有武器。」但是，用什麼武器呢?介於對話與獨白之間、介於哲學論證與狡獪強辯之間、介於白晝與黑夜間、介於性別與種族間的這場戲，就嘎然而止於這個問號上。
Written in 1985, published in 1986 and premiered in 1987, Dans la solitude des champs de cotton (In the Solitude of Cotton Fields) is the astonishing classic Bernard-Marie Koltes left to the world. Two anonymous characters, the Dealer and the Client, engage in a mildly argumentative, mildly menacing back and forth of long speeches that seem to be a potentially illicit transaction, and towards the end their wrestle in language turns into violent actions. No rules, no strategies, only weapons, but what kind? The play proceeds between the monologue and the conversation, the philosophical debate and the nonsensical quarrel, the gender and the race, and eventually ends in a question mark.
