殘筆居士偶過紫靈禪堂，作十八羅漢圖。五百年後，紫靈殘破，只餘淨禾女尼一人（魏海敏飾）。淨禾曾從山澗救起一孩童，取名宇青（溫宇航飾），隨淨禾參禪習畫。宇青長大，淨禾命他離去，而宇青要求將十八羅漢圖修復之後才下山。師徒二人輪流作畫，同在一處，絕不見面，一晝一夜，彩霞相隔。一年後修復完成，淨禾卻發覺心事盡在筆鋒，因而不敢面對此圖，將畫送給宇青。宇青下山，入墨哲城古董店凝碧軒工作，軒主（唐文華飾，年輕妻子由凌嘉臨飾演）發現宇青秘密，設計向赤惹夫人（劉海苑飾）告密陷害。宇青遭監禁十五年，出獄造假畫報復，同時軒主少妻收藏十五年的真跡也完璧歸趙。老年的淨禾被請下山，辨畫之真假。面對真跡，淨禾驚覺二人幽情密意早已流露筆端。是殘筆？還是你我？人間哪有真跡？面對仿作，雖明知為假，卻從中探知宇青十五年困頓心境。畫雖假、情為真，淨禾將此畫帶回紫靈，因為其中有個她不認識的宇青。此劇藉虛構之情節與時空，論藝術真諦。
When Hermit Can-bi passes by Ziling Temple, he becomes inspired and paints“The 18 Lohans.”Five hundred years later, Ziling Temple is almost like a ruin, and only Jing-he the nun（played by Hai-min Wei）stays in the temple. Jing-he saves a boy in the valley and names him Yu-qing（played by Yu-hang Wen）who stays with her to learn to paint and meditate. When Yu-qing grows up, Jing-he tells him to leave, but Yu-qing begs to stay to restore the painting of“The 18 Lohans”before he leaves. The nun and her disciple take turns painting. They both stay in the temple, but they do not see each other, just like day and night, divided by the colorful clouds at sunset. A year later, Yu-qing leaves the temple and works in Ningbi-Xuan, an antique shop of Muozhe City. When the owner of the shop（played by Wen-hwa Tang,with Jia-lin Ling playing his wife）finds out Yu-qing's secret, he schemes and frames Yu-qing by telling Lady Xiang-chi（played by Hai-yuan Liu）the secret. After serving his term in prison for 15 years, Yu-qing paints a forged painting, intending to get revenge. The aged nun Jing-he is asked to leave the temple to tell whether the painting is real or a fake. When facing the authentic painting, Jing-he realizes that the painting reflects the intimate feelings between Yu-qing and her. Whose feeling is conveyed in the painting？Hermit Can-bi's？Or yours and mine？Where can one find an authentic painting in the world？Facing the forged painting, Jing-he sees in it the troubled mind of Yu-qing over the past 15 years. It may be a forged painting, but it reveals the true feelings of the painter Jing-he who brings the painting back to the temple for the reason that it contains a Yu-qing unknown to her. The opera explores the true meaning of art with fictional plots and settings.
