The traditional ballads, dances and rituals of Taiwan's indigenous people are unique, beautiful and precious. However, under the impact of mainstream culture, the inheritance, preservation and promotion of the traditional culture of Taiwan's indigenous people are on the verge of being lost. Therefore, since 2003, the TECO Technology Foundation has been calling for collaborative efforts to establish a platform for resource supply and demand. This involves "adopting" training funds to collectively support the transmission and education of traditional music and dance skills for indigenous communities. The cultural revitalization and inheritance plan has been named "Exclamation Mark" since 2009. It continues to produce "traditional culture and art, educational achievements, and sustainable energy." It helps Taiwan's indigenous ethnic groups with spoken but unwritten languages significantly in terms of inheritance, development, and sustainability.

To encourage the transmission team to actively carry out the cultural revitalization program, a form of theater has been produced since 2005, motivating the team to challenge the professional stage. After 20 years of training, the results of the transmission have not only turned "Amazing Dancing and Music" into the core project of "Exclamation Mark" but also made it a project for the digital collection of traditional, ancient, and precious ethnic culture and art. Until 2024, more than 30 performances of "Amazing Dancing and Music" have been produced.

In 2024, 37 teams are being supported by "Exclamation Mark," and, for the first time, "Amazing Dancing and Music" will be held at National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying). 7 indigenous transmission teams have been invited to perform traditional music, dance, and rituals representing five ethnic groups, including Paiwan, Amis, Bunun, Tsou, and Taroko. Some of the ancient ballads will be arranged by LEE Che-yi, the music director of the One Song Orchestra, and other musicians based on the vocals of the ancient ballads. The program is being given rich layered features to the ancient ballads, creating a high-quality crossover performance of ancient ballads and dance to produce a wonderful video and audio performance that is the result of long-term tempering and accumulation. The performance team comes from four cities, including Pingtung, Taitung, Chiayi, and Hualien, with more than 329 performers. Theater professionals who specialize in lighting, sound, imaging, and stage technology are also hired to participate in the production and execution with their passion for indigenous traditional culture and art. From 2017 to 2023, "Exclamation Mark" has continued to be shortlisted for the Golden Melody Award for Traditional Arts (GMAFTA) seven times and won once with 2020 Amazing Dancing & Music - The Performing Arts of Taiwan Indigenous People and it continues to promote the exhibition and digital collection of traditional indigenous music and dance.

Performance production instructions: 7 indigenous transmissions teams were selected from the 37 teams in Exclamation Mark.

  1. Collecting the traditional ballads and dances of one's own tribe in the fields.

  2. Call on the tribe members to practice in groups, and aim for a theater performance. Each group will create and produce a 10-20 minute performance.

  3. Jointly perform traditional folk songs, dances and rituals of seven major tribes of the five major ethnic groups, including the Taroko, Tsou, Paiwan, Bunun and Amis.

  4. The production team is composed of individuals familiar with indigenous performing arts and theater performances. Some performances are arranged and performed by the One Song Orchestra in a crossover form, providing ancient ballads a rich layer of features. The exquisite crossover performances and wonderful scenes of creation and performance are all the result of long-term tempering and accumulation.

  5. More than 50 ancient tunes and ritual dances are presented rigorously and wonderfully in the spirit of "returning to nature."

  6. Purely professional performances with deep traditional cultural and artistic value are produced in the spirit of "returning to nature." At the same time, through performances, professional capabilities in production, performance, cultural preservation, inheritance, and revitalization (including talent cultivation) are built for all teams.
