舒伯特在1823 年的一場大病後，精神與身體健康渡過危機，開始一連串的室內樂創作。這首第13 號ａ小調弦樂四重奏《羅莎蒙德》則是這一波作品之首，也是他的十五首弦樂四重奏當中，唯一在他生前發表並公開演奏的作
品。《羅莎蒙德》是來自於1823 年創作的同名劇樂，舒伯特將其中一段抒情主題稍做修改，放進了第二樂章中。第一樂章在深邃而恬靜的弦律中，潛伏著憂鬱與激動互相衝擊的情緒。第二樂章主題中的長—短—短節奏，是舒伯特非常喜歡的節奏，也是他樂曲的一個特徵。看似簡樸的第三樂章，雖質樸無華卻隱藏著無窮的吸引力。終樂章則是具有幾分鄉村歡宴的歡快樂章。

In 1823, SCHUBERT contracted a severe illness, causing mental and physical distress. When the crisis had passed and his health was improving again, he began working on a series of chamber music works. The quartet in a minor, Rosamunde is from his first wave, and the only quartet among his 15 that was both published and performed publicly during his lifetime. Its name Rosamunde comes from the incidental music he also composed for a play of the same name; slightly modifying the theme, he used it for the second movement of the quartet. The first movement creates both emotions of melancholy and excitement, with its sorrowful melody accompanied by subtle rhythmic flow and agitation below. The second movement features the quarter-note followed by 2 eighth-notes rhythm, which is a very common feature in SCHUBERT'S music, also giving a somber quality to the movement. The third movement is seemingly unpretentious, but beauty is found in its simplicity. The final movement is full of joy with a tinge of countryside festivities.
