逐夢、入夢、夢境、夢醒、逐夢 《閻羅夢》的素材早始於古代小說《鬧陰司司馬貌斷獄》，清雜劇和皮黃也有人編演過《大轉輪》《罵閻羅》，而此次所推出的《閻羅夢》，絕對不是老戲新編，劇作家在舊素材的觸發之下，創作出屬於當代的全新劇作。故事敘述漢代書生司馬貌，滿腹經綸，一生潦倒，他不肯苟同於當時官吏賣宮鬻爵的作為，依理力爭卻招來一頓毒打，憤而寫下怨詞，驚動天帝，把自己推薦到陰司當「半日閻羅」，於六個時辰之內重寫生死簿旋乾轉坤。他重斷漢初項羽、韓信舊案，牽引關羽、曹操、李後主、宋太宗......上下古今穿越空。一陣前世來生、因果糾纏之後，司馬貌對宇宙生態另有一番了悟，而回到現世，他又將如何呢？
Journey through hell The theme of Journey through Hell originates from an ancient novel, “Disturbing the Hell, Su Ma-mou Closes Trials with New Verdicts.” Adapted plays with the same origination like The Big Turning Wheel and Scolding the Ruler of the Hell were presented in the forms of Variety Show and Pihwong Opera in Ching dynasty. Journey through Hell, however, is not presented this time as a new version adapted from an old play. The playwright creates a brand new contemporary work with the old theme as an inspiration. The story portraits a scholar in Han dynasty, Su Ma-mou, who is rather erudite but out of luck all his life. Being reluctant to tolerate the behaviors of the officers in his time, who accept bribery and confer official ranks for money, he fights vigorously for justice but instead gets a good beating. Out of anger, he writes down his complaints, astonishing the chief god in heaven. He recommends himself as the Half-day Ruler of the hell, rewriting the life-and-death record within twelve hours. He reexamines the case of Hsiang Yu and Han Hsing in the early Han dynasty bringing other famous historical figures like Kuan Yu, Tsao Tsao, Lee Ho Tzu, Song Tai Tzong, and so on. Crossing the time and space, the past and the future life with the entanglement of causes and effects, Su Ma-mou develops a new insight of seeing this world. What will become of him after he returns back to this life?
