那年春天，才情洋溢的少年李益（十郎），以「開簾風動竹，疑是故人來」的詩句，名揚京城；退役將軍花卿的愛妾鮑四娘改詩入曲，以娛嘉賓，獲郭小侯的愛賞。宴席上花卿因李益一語重燃塞外封侯的豪情，竟以鮑四娘換取名馬。此外，李益一首《人日詞》寄寓「人壽千秋，仙顏轉少」的願景，也觸動霍王求仙當及時的感悟，留下鄭六娘母女相依為命，小玉改賜姓霍。 鮑四娘將自己現實中的失落，轉化成積極牽合李益與霍小玉姻緣的動力。新婚三朝，李益與霍小玉趕趁宮廷的元宵燈會，卻被推擠的人群步履衝散。倉皇之間，小玉滑倒在地，拾得一管宮中紫簫，為了全身而歸，不惜以偷竊罪名被捕問訊；慧眼靈心的她，終能簫合人圓。然而，庶出的命運，情分的無常，時常讓小玉內心有著深切的不安。 新婚一月，李益得中春榜第一，奉命朔方參軍，他本是志得意滿，害怕面對小玉的千萬串淚珠，與無盡的等待。直至久羈塞外，生死攸關之際，李益才體會到情將萬物羈的真諦：「生待何為？死又何及？」他恨不能終天究竟，參透機鋒⋯⋯

One spring, the talented youth LI Yi (Shih-lang) became well-known in the Capital when his poem “Wind stirring the open bamboo blinds, suggesting the arrival of an old friend” went viral. The poem was so famous that the concubine of the veteran general HUA Cing, BAO Sih-niang, adapted LI Yi's poem into a song for entertaining party guests and she was rewarded by the young aristocrat GUO Siao-hou. At the party, HUA Cing's old ambition for earning a noble title on the battlefields outside the border was rekindled by LI Yi's speech. He gave away BAO Sih-niang in exchange for a thoroughbred horse. Meanwhile, the parable “If one lives for one millennium, his/her face will regain the look of youth.” from LI Yi's Ren Rih Ci (Poetry of Human's Life) reminded King HUO that one should seek the path to becoming a celestial being as soon as possible. So he abandoned JHENG Liou-niang and the daughter she bore him, Siao-yu. Yet he allowed Siao-yu to take on his family name of HUO. Trying to forget her misery, BAO Sih-niang worked hard to match LI Yi and HUO Siao-yu. Three days after their marriage, LI Yi and HUO Siao-yu went to the Lantern Festival held next to the Palace, where they were separated by the crowd. During the heaving of the crowd, Siao-yu fell and saw a piece of purple xiao (flute). She picked it up and was arrested immediately. It was the property of the royal court. In order to leave the crowd quickly before being crushed underfoot, Siao-yu admitted her sin when she was accused of stealing the flute. She was taken away for interrogation and answered the questions wisely. As a result, she was released and reunited with LI Yi. However, the feeling of uncertainty remained with her because she was the daughter of a concubine and knew that love rarely lasts. One month later, LI Yi won first place in the Imperial Examination held in spring. He was commanded to join the army at Shuofang, Inner Mongolia. He left proudly and willingly, although deep inside he was scared of facing his sobbing wife, Siao-yu and the endless wait for an uncertain future.
