YU-CHUNG TSENG:Trio for violin, clarinet and piano This piece was created as a sequel for the work Atmosphere, for string orchestra, which the trio performed at their school’s anniversary concert in 2003. While strictly a piece to be played by a trio of violin, clarinet, and piano, it also has the effect of sounding like a quartet. Throughout, four separate parts intertwine to feature the atonality of the 20th century. With variable speed, dissonance, and dramatic pauses, the three instruments together create a mystical, lighthearted, and eerie atmosphere. J. M. DAMASE:Trio for flute, clarinet and piano Damase, (1928-present) is a contemporary French composer known for his graceful and enchanting style. Unlike other French composers who employ abstract and interpretative styles, Damase tries to create a taste of the city and bourgeoisie style, which is closer to French tradition. This work for a trio is a good example. In his early years, Damase was known as a pianist and he won the Prix de Rome with his cantata Et la belle se r éveilla in 1947. Subsequently he created various works for opera, ballet, string orchestra and chamber music. He is a multi-talented musician and has also worked as the conductor of Bordeaux opera house. O. MESSIAEN:Quatuor pour la fin du temps Messiaen was a French contemporary composer (1908-1992) who had a mystical religious experience. During the second world war (1941), when Messiaen was captured and imprisoned in Go¨rlitz concentration camp in Silesia, Poland, he was inspired by the book of Revelations in the Bible and wrote this piece about God. In the same year, the piece was premiered with several musicians who were also imprisoned in the camp, including violinist Jean Le Boulaire, cellist Etienne Pasquier, and clarinetist Henri Akoka while Messiaen played the piano himself. Although the instruments used were in bad condition, the piece attracted a large audience in the camp. The work is composed of 8 movements, symbolizing eight special days in Christianity and a bit of mystic feeling. (As the seventh day is the Sabbath, the day on which God rested, the association with infinity of the seventh day causes it to be symbolic of eternal light and the eighth day with the peace tha, then comes from such.) 1st Movement:Liturgie de cristal “Between three and four in the morning, the awakening of birds:a solo blackbird or nightingale improvises, surrounded by a shimmer of sound, by a halo of trills lost very high in the trees. Transpose this onto a religious plane and you have the harmonious silence of Heaven.” 2nd Movement:Vocalise, pour I’Ange qui announce la fin du Temps: The piano represents the powerful angel with strong chords. The piano becomes a peacefully sweet waterfall and a bell from afar during a segment in the middle, while the violin and cello provide a gentle and religious hymn music. 3rd Movement:Abîme des oiseaux Solo for clarinet. “The abyss is Time with its sadness, its weariness. The birds are the opposite to Time; they are our desire for light, for stars, for rainbows, and for jubilant songs.” 4th Movement:intermède It is a scherzo of trio by violin, cello and clarinet. The powerful unison in the beginning forms a strong contrast to the previous movement, and the melody is reprised in the 6th movement to form a cycle. 5th Movement:Louange à I’Éternité de Jésus A duet for the cello and piano. Solemn and holy music from cello evoke the words of Jesus and brings a melody full of expression accompanied by bell-like piano. As it is written in Hebrews 1:12, “But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” 6th Movement:Danse de la fureur, pour les sept trompettes All the four instruments play in unison symbolizing the verse in Revelation, with the “first six trumpets of the Apocalypse followed by various disasters, the trumpet of the seventh angel announcing consummation of the mystery of God.” Here the composer expresses the vision of glory and the promise that the time will come to an end. The melody from the second movement is reprised here, with the composer commenting in his preface that “[t] he angel appears in full force, especially the rainbow that covers him (the rainbow, symbol of peace, wisdom, and all luminescent and sonorous vibration). -In my dreams, I hear and see ordered chords and melodies, known colors and shapes; then, after this transitiona1 stage, I pass through the unreal and suffer, with ecstasy, a tournament, a roundabout compenetration of superhuman sounds and colors. These swords of fire, this blue-orange lava, these sudden stars:there is the tangle, there are the rainbows!” 8th Movement:Louange à I’Immortalité de Jésus The violin corresponds with the cello from the 5th movement; this movement symbolizes the second image of Jesus as a human. It is an expression of holy words of life by the composer, moving upward to the higher pitch and signifying the ascension to God in the heaven.
