Synopsis
The Jade Hairpin was written by Lien Kao, Ming Dynasty, telling the love story between a student Bi-Zheng Pan and a government official’s daughter Jiao-Lian Chen (Miao-Chang) in the Southern Song Dynasty.
Refuge at the temple
Although betrothed before birth by their parents, they never knew the existence of each other. Losing contact with her mother during the Jurchen invasion, Jiao-Lian settled in a Taoist temple run by Bi-Zheng’s aunt, Fa-Cheng Pan, then devoted herself to Taoism and was given the monastic name Miao-Chang. Bi-Zheng, embarrassed to return home for failing to pursue government posts, first encountered his fiancée Miao-Chang when he, too, decided to settle in his aunt’s temple.
Repartee of the zithers
Charmed by Miao-Chang, one night Bi-Zheng conveyed his feelings via music in response to the zither she played by the moonlight. Constricted by monastic disciplines, Miao-Chang refused him in zither tunes, but surrendered, after Bi-Zheng departed in dismay, to her true feelings, which he overheard and answered behind the door. Hence the two began to fall in love to each other.
Visiting the sick
Unable to see into Miao-Chang’s mind, Bi-Zheng turned from melancholy to illness. However, when his aunt Fa-Cheng and Miao-Chang visited him, he was so soothed by Miao-Chang’s encouraging words that he even believed it at first when his servant teased him by saying Miao-Chang was capable of healing.
A theft of poetry
Miao-Chang fell asleep after composing a poem about her affection for Bi-Zheng. Happening to be taking a walk nearby, Bi-Zheng sneaked through her half-c1osed door and found the poem. Delighted beyond measure, he stole it away and read it out loud when Miao-Chang stirred and faked annoyance. Couldn't hide her emotions anymore, she vowed to be his.
Pressing departure
The rumors reached Fa-Cheng Pan, who pressed Bi-Zheng to leave and take examinations for government posts, fearing the scandal will corrupt the holy temple. Forced and escorted to the riverside, Bi-Zheng, though heartbroken, had no choice but to take the boat and leave.
Riverside farewell
Miao-Chang rushed to the revirside and chased him down the river in another boat. Finally she reached him in the middle of the river, and the two vowed again, exchanging tokens of love Later, Bi-Zheng succeeded in the examination. He married Miao-Chang and reunited with their families in the hometown, where they found out that they had belonged to each other at birth.
