《西樓記》傳奇是明末清初袁于令的戲曲代表作，描述書生于鵑與青樓名妓穆素徽兩人因寫《楚江情》詞曲互相愛慕的故事。 于鵑，字叔夜，為京畿解元，所創作的樂府詩，經常流行在舞榭歌臺，並享有盛名。蘇州平康巷西樓名妓穆素徽，能歌善舞，因厭倦風月場中的生活，經常託病謝客。由於素徽對叔夜所制的《楚江情》描繪青樓女子對蜂媒蝶使的厭倦，與不被旁人理解的清高情懷，正好反映自身的處境，更加深愛慕之心，而叔夜也從旁得知素徽醉心自己的文采，慕名求見。西樓上，素徽扶病相見，兩人情投意合，同歌《楚江情》訂下婚約。 叔夜詩友趙伯將在妓戶劉楚楚家看到自己所作詞曲被叔夜擅自修改，心生怨懟，遂向于父調唆，致使素徽受迫搬離蘇州，貪財的鴇母又趁此機會將素徽賣於相國公子池同，遭遇一連串陰錯陽差的訊息誤導，致使二人在西樓匆匆別後⋯⋯。
The Story of Xi Lou Ji is a masterpiece of Chinese opera written by YUAN Yu-lin, an author from the late Ming to early Qing dynasties. It is composed of 44 acts which depict how the famous harlot MU Su-hui fell in love with the scholar YU Juan after she read verse The Story of Chu Jiang. It turned into a mutual love. YU Juan, whose courtesy name is YU Shu-ye, won first place at the Chinese imperial examination held in Beijing. His Yuefu poems were widespread amongst venues which made him well-known. The famous harlot MU Su-hui from the brothel along Ping-Kang Lane in Suzhou was a skillful singer and dancer, but loathed her life as a harlot and frequently refused to entertain men with the excuse that she was sick. She read Shu-ye's The Story of Chu Jiang which depicts how some harlots are forced into their situations and actually wish to flee them. She felt he had captured her feelings precisely, and fell in love with him. Meanwhile Shu-ye heard Su-hui was moved by his writing, and took the initiative to visit her. Not concerned about her illness, Su-hui met with Shu-ye at the Xi Lou. They found out that their love was mutual, and agreed to marry after singing The Story of Chu Jiang together. ZHAO Bo-jiang, Shu-ye's friend with whom he often shared his poetry, found out at the brothel where the harlot LIU Chu- chu resided that Shu-ye had revised ZHAO's verse without telling him. He was furious and told Shu-ye's father about his son dating a harlot. Su-hui was forced to leave Suzhou. She bid farewell to Shu-ye briefly at Xi Lou. At the same time the greedy madame sold Su-hui to CHI Tong, son of the chancellor. A series of unfortunate incidents and misunderstandings followed, forcing Su-hui and Shu-ye to wait a long time before being able to meet once more.
