Foreword

This

Miroirs

is Not That

Miroirs

A light breeze lifts her gossamer veil, revealing a delicate visage of youth that beckons to the sea. The waves dance to the songs of the wind.

With each arriving wave, the rising tide silently claims the shore. The alabaster feet of a maiden, poised upon the crest of waves, brush the water's surface with ethereal grace. A playful zephyr unfurls her gossamer veil to reveal a delicate visage of youth that whispers to the sea. The waves dance to the song of the wind.

The call of ancestral spirits echoes through time.

After a year of diligent preparation, the zenith of our odyssey is a mere three months away. The past three decades have been a time of growth, brimming with challenges and cherished moments This year, the Legend Lin Dance Theatre embarked on the ambitious journey of

Miroirs de Vie

Miroirs de Vie

is a journey in search of roots. Reflecting upon her cultural heritage, Artistic Director/Choreographer Lin Lee-chen seeks to reconnect with the emotive landscape grounded in Taiwanese tradition. Through a process of purification, she arrives at a profound understanding: beyond our differences of ethnicity and culture lies a universal essence shared by humanity and the natural world – a quest that has become her lifelong pursuit.

Miroirs de Vie

articulates a life philosophy deeply entrenched in reverence for the cosmos and in a heart that brims with compassion.

The performance opens with the deep, reverberating pulses of drums, symbolically evoking a portal between the realms of the mortal and the sacred. The goddess Matzu, representing faith, shepherds souls across the sea and into the sanctity of the ritual. An act of physical cleansing marks the initiation of this sacred rite. Emotions, tender yet unspoken, unfold between the participants until a latent discord erupts, culminating in a visceral confrontation. The soothing caresses of water transform grief into acceptance, as life and legacy flow through the veins of the earth. A solitary lamp flickers while joss papers float in the breeze. The ritual concludes with the resonant echoes of the Heart Sutra.

Miroirs de Vie

challenges conventional dance forms, and returns to a primal and pristine "body archetype." Lin Lee-chen advocates a process of "Stable, serene, relaxed, grounded, slow, strong" in guiding muscles and joints toward a deliberate, snail-paced exploration that reveals the internal cosmos of the body -- a repository of millennia-old memories and emotions. The dynamics that emerge from a transcendent conception manifest a restrained yet profound cohesion. Beyond mere movement, the unwavering conviction of the performers in each instant radiates an inexhaustible vitality that engages the audience.

Employing a technique reminiscent of cinematic jump cuts, the staging of

Miroirs de Vie

creates an overlapping temporospatial dimension that conjures an ethereal and profound ambiance on a stage that has been adapted for additional depth. Drawing inspiration from cinematic camera movements, the arrangement of performers dynamically shifts to amplify cumulative energy that builds toward an explosive release in the choreography. Abstract and multifaced, curtains and silvergrass become protagonists within this dance narrative. The burgeoning silvergrass channels the untamed spirit of the mortal realm, while the cascading curtains comforts all life on earth. This tableau is suspended in memory and in fragments of the imagination.

Musically, the piece returns to essence: from Nanguan music and vocal chants, to sonorous gongs, large drums, bronze chimes, and traditional Chinese percussion instruments, and extending to electronic ambient soundscapes. By drawing from rich and diverse elements, the work evokes resonance between the internal body and the external world, drawing the audience into a deeper communion and response.
