《西樓記》傳奇是明末清初袁于令的戲曲代表作，全劇共44個折目，描述書生于鵑與青樓女子穆素徽兩人因寫詞曲互相愛慕的故事。 于鵑，字叔夜，為京畿解元，所創作的樂府詩，經常流行在舞榭歌臺，並享有盛名。蘇州平康巷西樓女子穆素徽，能歌善舞，因厭倦風月場中的生活，經常托病謝客。由於素徽對叔夜所制的【楚江情】描繪青樓女子對蜂媒蝶使的厭倦，與不被旁人理解的清高情懷，正好反映自身的處境，更加深愛慕之心，而叔夜也從旁得知素徽醉心自己的文采，慕名求見。西樓上，素徽扶病相見，兩人情投意合，同歌【楚江情】訂下婚約。後因于父受到趙伯將挾怨調唆，逼迫素徽搬離蘇州，鴇母又趁此機會將素徽賣於相國公子池同，一連串遭遇各種陰錯陽差又合情合理的訊息誤導，致使二人在西樓匆匆別後…。 本劇由臺灣劇場導演王嘉明，以當代的觀點切入，自原著中選取15個折目，刪減濃縮成一個晚上的演出劇本；演出本保留仍在舞台上搬演的折目〈樓會〉、〈拆書〉、〈玩箋、錯夢〉，除了刻劃男女主角情感深度與呈現崑曲的細緻質地之外，也有傳承的象徵。導演將〈玩箋、錯夢〉拆開變成下半場的開頭與結尾，把原著中不合理的情節，全部置入夢境中，結尾回到于叔夜病醒，一切人生還未明朗的狀態，這狀態並不是讓觀眾解脫，而是讓觀眾回到最現實的人生。

The Story of Xi Lou Ji(Tale of the West Tower) is an operatic masterpiece by Yuan Yu-Ling of the late Ming dynasty to early Qing dynasty. It consists of forty-four acts that recounts the story of a young scholar and a courtesan, who fell in love with one another through composing music and lyrics. Yu Juan, also named YU Shu-Ye, is a scholar who won the first place in provincial imperial examinations. He is known for his lyrical poetry which is popular among entertainment stages. MU Su-Hui, a courtesan in Suzhou, has been sick of he career and thus refuses to serve the customers by claiming being ill. MU Su-Hui finds that the lyrics of The Sentiment of River Chu written by YU Shu-Ye reflects her own condition of exhaustion and solitude, and falls for him. YU Shu-Ye is also aware of MU Su-Hui's admiration and asks to meet her. On the West Tower, they encounter and fall in love with each other, singing The Sentiment of River Chu as the vow for their marriage engagement. Instigated by ZHAO Bo-Jiang, YU's father forces MU Su-Hui to move away. Meanwhile, the procuress seizes the opportunity to sell MU Su-Hui to CHI Tong, the son of the grand chancellor. After a series of peculiar incidents and mis-elivery of messages, the lovers bid brief farewell at the West Tower… This version is directed by Taiwanese theatre director WANG Chia-Ming. Through a contemporary viewpoint, WANG selected 15 extracts from the original opera and compiled them into a one-night performance. The performance will portray the acts that are still widely presented on stage, including“Meeting at the Tower”,“Tearing of the Book”,“Mis-delivery of the Message and Misconstruing Dream”. Not only will it depict the deepest bond between the lead characters and the delicate texture of Kunqu Opera, but also symbolize passing on of the tradition. The director divides the act“Mis-delivery of the Message and Misconstruing Dream”into two, making the former the prologue of the second act, and the latter the epilogue. He also set all the illogical plots in a dream. The opera concludes when YU Shu-Ye is awake from his illness, a liminal state of an undecided future, leaving no relief to the audience but bringing them back to the most realistic live.
