National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan (NCO) is a national orchestra comprising the elites from domestic field of traditional music. It aims to explore the tradition, have a foothold on the native land, and embrace the present age. Through creation, it lays the foundation for Taiwan’s traditional music, and expresses the taste of Taiwanese aesthetics by performances. Its goal is to enhance Taiwan’s tradition and contemporary music, for deepening the beauty of Taiwan through mellow music internationally. The predecessor of NCO was “National Art Academy Experimental Chinese Orchestra” founded by the Ministry of Education in 1984, with the mission to engage in academic research and development of country and culture, race and music, theory and practice, teaching and performance. Since January 2008, it had once been administrated by National Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center until March of the same year, when it changed its name to be “National Chinese Orchestra” and then switched to be under the jurisdiction of Council for Cultural Affairs (CCA), Executive Yuan. In May 2012, the Ministry of Culture was established, so the orchestra was renamed “National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan (NCO)” formally, becoming a performing team under the jurisdiction of National Center for Traditional Arts.
