TIFA, A Flourishing Arts Banquet!

For each TIFA, we look forward to presenting works we believe are must-sees and artists we think deserve more attention via this platform that reflects both the world and Taiwan.

After the pandemic, artists from Taiwan and around the world are in a crouched position, preparing to take a leap. With unwavering attitudes, they respond to the world by challenging boundaries and limitations via their artistic skills and perspective. A total of 118 outstanding performances by 18 performing artists and art groups from 11 countries demonstrate this platform's unique landscapes of diversity and inclusivity. Together, we will experience classic reversals of imagination, extraordinary perspective, and subversive works that cross eras and styles. We will journey through adventures that challenge limitations, explore life and death through immersive technology, and witness long-awaited performances by renowned maestros.

Last but not least, a series of peripheral events have been planned for TIFA, with the expectation of countless possibilities for the public to experience the arts. Perhaps, TIFA can be likened to a garden with flowers in bloom, into which you are welcome to enter and search for your own way to participate in the arts based on your preferred attitude and perspective.

Please join us for this flourishing arts banquet!

Programme Notes

Uz AZeR

This is where the Pacific Ocean meets the Indian Ocean—as we weave Kavalan culture into poetry and blend world music into its verses. The unadorned vocals of the Pacific intertwine with the enchanting sounds of the ancient Indian sitar, presenting a musical landscape beyond imagination yet rich with human warmth. The ethereal melodies of the sitar intertwine with the ritualistic chants of Taiwan's Kavalan people, forming a river of life. We hope to bring a deeper, more profound musical landscape to everyone we encounter. For this performance, we will embark on this journey alongside our longtime musical partners, exploring an ensemble arrangement we have never attempted before.

SiyuLand Psychedelic Trio

The Psychedelic Trio has always been core to SiyuLand's creative expression. Psychedelic music is recognized for its hypnotic sounds, repetitive rhythms, and exploration of altered states of consciousness. SiyuLand crafts mesmerizing works built on a foundation of psychedelic music, with the interplay of drums, piano, sitar, and vocals, where the sitar’s sustained resonance and psychedelic electronic textures create an airy and dreamlike atmosphere.

The lyrics express and contemplate the awe and philosophical reflections on nature, the universe, and life. As listeners immerse themselves in the music, they are transported into a dreamscape filled with wonder and imagination.

A Fusion of Indian Music

The graceful melodies of the sitar intertwine with the sharp, defined rhythms of the Indian tabla, creating a captivating musical experience. Embracing diverse musical cultures with an open mind and exploring cross-cultural creativity has always been a core principle of SiyuLand's artistry. In this session, Indian tabla player Akash Dubey will spark a dynamic interplay between ancient Indian music and psychedelic rock. Dubey excels at showcasing this ancient instrument's rich and dynamic tonal expressions and has been a longtime collaborator with SiyuLand, co-creating many unique fusion performances and works. Through solos, duets, and collaborations with the psychedelic trio, we will seamlessly weave our distinct styles into a seamless tapestry that reveals entirely new musical colors.

Kavalan Music

As someone of Kavalan heritage, I have always been dedicated to integrating the raw essence and communal spirit of Kavalan music into our creations. Kavalan traditional music and culture are deeply rooted in reverence for nature and ancestral wisdom, adding a warm and profound depth to SiyuLand’s music. For example, “qayqutay” (

The Wandering Song of Collecting Ferns

) is a fixed melody with fluid lyrics, making it a folk tune commonly heard in everyday life. On the other hand, “mrarikid”(

The Traditional Celebration Song

) and “miomio”(

Kavalan Harvest Festival

) are two songs traditionally sung during harvest celebrations. The former is a reflective piece that encourages the community to look back on the past year and strive for improvement, while the latter is a joyous tribute to the year's hard work and abundant harvest. SiyuLand will collaborate with two vocalists, blending diverse styles to breathe new life into these ancient traditions.

This performance is more than just layering different musical elements—it is an exploration of cultural fusion. SiyuLand and the musicians interweave psychedelic and world music, Indian traditions, and Kavalan culture in a way that is uniquely their own. We look forward to sharing with the audience a musical language that belongs solely to Siyu Island—one born from our passion and the love that the heavens bestow upon the world.
