如同前文提及，因為與第六號皆是C大調，第九號就被安上了「大」的標題，但由於此曲長度與富含浪漫宏大的精神性，華文世界多還是用「偉大」稱之。完成於1826 年，舒伯特生前兩次去信維也納音樂之友協會，希望以題獻之名換取演出機會，但都遭拒。一直到舒伯特去世後10 年，舒曼在維也納從舒伯特的哥哥處得到本曲總譜，認為它有著「天堂般的長度」，大力說服孟德爾頌首演此作，世人才得以聽聞。

第一樂章由行板開始，法國號吹出令人印象深刻的主題，此段導奏有自己的奏鳴曲式發展，之後轉為不太快的快板的激昂旋律為第一主題，第二主題則是轉調自導奏，最後樂團整體又以導奏的主題結束此樂章。第二樂章為稍快的行板，以ABABA 的結構組成，A 段先從雙簧管獨奏吹出主題，運用很多點音帶出節奏感，B 段則是變為圓滑奏的下行主題，兩者以相對風格交織。第三樂章是活潑的快板，採用詼諧曲ABA 形式，A 段旋律激烈且令人印象深刻，B 段則是令人聯想到貝多芬第四號交響曲的恬靜旋律。第四樂章同樣是活潑的快板，起首的第一主題激動且充滿氣勢，第二主題則是用管樂帶出歌唱性的長音，之後更出現轉化自貝多芬《歡樂頌》的主題，展開後三者合而為一，將整首樂曲推疊至最高峰結尾。

As mentioned above, because Symphony No. 9 is in the same key of C Major as No. 6, and much longer, it is given the title of the Great. Because of not only the length but also its romantic and grand spirit, the Chinese world uses " 偉大" ─ great as in important and excellent—as its title. After completing the symphony in 1826, SCHUBERT wrote twice to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Society of Friends of Music in Vienna), hoping to exchange the work's dedication for an opportunity for it to be performed, but both times was rejected. It was not until 10 years after SCHUBERT's death that SCHUMANN received the score from SCHUBERT's brother in Vienna, hailed the symphony for its "heavenly length," and persuaded MENDELSSOHN to premiere it, thus the world was able to hear it for the first time. 

The first movement begins with an Andante, with the French horn playing a remarkable theme. This introduction has its sonata structure, and then turns to an Allegro ma non troppo with a passionate melody for the first theme. The second theme was modulated from the introduction, then it ends the movement with the introduction's theme. The second movement is an Andante con moto, structured in an ABABA form. Section A starts with the oboe soloing the theme, and uses a lot of staccato to bring out the rhythm. Section B is a descending legato theme. The two contrasting  styles interweave throughout the movement. The third movement is an Allegro vivace, an ABA form Scherzo, with an intense and impressive melody in section A and a quiet melody reminiscent of BEETHOVEN's Symphony No. 4 in section B. The fourth movement is also an Allegro vivace. Its first theme is exciting and full of momentum. The second is melodic long-note phrases played by the winds. The third theme quotes from BEETHOVEN's Ode to Joy; combining the three themes leads to the pinnacle finale ending.
