這是一個扎扎實實的集體創作。每分每秒的討論、演員的功課、所有的細節、一切的一切，都為這個創作逐漸去蕪存菁、逐漸剪出形狀。這個創作說來也簡單，「剪」是動詞、「紙」是名詞、「人」便是演繹之人，合在一起，一齣戲便發生了。《剪紙人》的創作過程其實真的就像剪紙本身，一張紙折呀折、細細剪，無論預想再周詳，打開來卻出現另一世界。若是隨性隨意，也自有驚喜。所以這個手腦並用、卻又得學習兩者皆拋的剪紙過程，像是同時挑戰未知和已知。怎麼說呢？《剪紙人》先有個故事在那兒，但是工作坊卻一再拋開故事，盡情玩紙玩身體玩空間，再一段段地放回故事裡。是六個演員的特質，決定了故事的走向，工作坊的玩耍決定素材的運用，這才又回頭看看那故事，和演員的想像與生命，之間的距離可以如何簡約，從加法到減法，就像從折紙到剪紙，鏤空又滿盈的生命輪廓。 是不是說的太多?也許吧。但台上的一切是活的，故事還在走。
This truly is a piece of collective creation. Every moment of discussion, actors' homework, all the details, everything above everything, gradually de-cluttering this piece and slowly cutting out its shape. In essence, it is a simple creation, “paper" a noun,“cut" a verb, and “-er" the person interpreting the patterns, put them together, and you have a show. The creation of The Cutter of Happiness is very much like paper-cutting itself, a piece of paper being folded over and again, delicately cut and trimmed, no matter how careful you thought it out beforehand, when you open up the pattern, a different world is revealed. If we cut with spontaneity, all the more surprises contained within. Therefore, this paper-cutting process which requires both hand and mind yet neither at the same time, is like challenging the known and unknown altogether. How should we put it? The Cutter of Happiness started with a story, but the workshop kept throwing it out of the window, fully exploiting the paper, the body and the space, and then putting them back into the story paragraph by paragraph. It is the qualities of the six actors that decided the direction of the story, the toying inside the workshop decided the use of materials; after which, we went back to look at the story, and see how we can shorten the distance between the imaginations and the lives of our actors, and how to go from addition to subtraction, like from folding paper to cutting paper, hollowing out yet fulfilling the profiles of life at the same time. Have we said too much? Perhaps. But everything on stage is alive, and the story continues.
