Prologue

Looking back on the 23-year journey of NTCH Summer Jazz, we've remained committed to bringing the unique and ever- changing character of jazz to more music lovers. It is precisely because jazz possesses both a rebellious spirit and an inclusive nature that it has been able to blossom into such rich and diverse expressions. This year, NTCH continues to serve as a window between Taiwan and the global jazz scene, inviting world-renowned artists to bring their distinct styles to the stage, each a shining star from the boundless universe we call "jazz."

Under the theme "Sounds Cool!", this summer, NTCH Summer Jazz will feature five spectacular programs. In addition to two international heavyweights, our signature "NTCH Summer Jazz Project" and outdoor party are not to be missed. The well- received "Relaxed Performance" continues to present a brand-new production this year, collaborating with Taiwan's exceptional musicians through dialogue and partnerships to further explore the jazz vocabulary rooted in this land.

And the excitement isn't limited to the stage—the off-stage activities are equally vibrant. This summer, from the Opening Party to the sustainability-themed market, we have planned a range of rich peripheral activities, including themed lecture, open rehearsal, and masterclass. NTCH Summer Jazz invites you to chill out and jazz up your summer!

Profile

Piano|Fred Hersch

A select member of jazz's piano pantheon, Fred Hersch has shaped the course of the music for over three decades as an improviser, composer, educator, and bandleader. Hailed as "the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade" by Vanity Fair and "a living legend" by The New Yorker, Hersch is a deeply influential force across generations of musicians.

A seventeen-time Grammy nominee, Hersch has received some of jazz's highest honors, including the Doris Duke Artist Award (2016), Jazz Pianist of the Year (2016, 2018) from the Jazz Journalists Association, and 2021's International Jazz Artist of the Year from Jazz Magazine (France). His expressive solo work, era-defining trios, and intimate duos have consistently set a high bar for creative excellence.

With over fifty albums as a leader or co-leader, Hersch continues to garner international acclaim. His 2024 ECM Records release Silent, Listening, produced by Manfred Eicher, adds to a distinguished discography. His trio's Live in Europe (2018) was hailed as its finest work, and Breath by Breath (2022), featuring a string quartet, was praised by Stereophilefor its elegance and detail.

Hersch's memoir Good Things Happen Slowly (Crown Archetype) offers a candid portrait of his life in music and as the first openly gay, HIV-positive jazz musician. It was named a top memoir of 2017 by The Washington Post and The New York Times. As a composer, Hersch has created major works such as Leaves of Grass (2003), a setting of Walt Whitman's poetry, and My Coma Dreams (2010), a multimedia piece drawn from his personal health journey.

Drums|Peter Erskine

Peter Erskine has played drums since the age of four and is celebrated for his versatility and musicianship across genres. With over 700 albums and film scores to his name, he has won two Grammy Awards and received an Honorary Doctorate from the Berklee College of Music. He has released 50 albums as a leader or co-leader and appears on recordings with legends including Weather Report, Steps Ahead, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Diana Krall, John Abercrombie, Pat Metheny and Gary Burton.

A frequent orchestral soloist, Erskine has performed with ensembles such as the London Symphony, BBC Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras. He premiered Fractured Lines by Mark-Anthony Turnage at the BBC Proms and Turnage's opera Anna Nicole at London's Royal Opera House. Turnage also composed the concerto Erskine, premiered in Bonn and later at the Hollywood Bowl.

Erskine began his professional career with the Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1972, later joining Maynard Ferguson and then Weather Report, where he recorded five albums including the Grammy-winning 8:30. He continued in New York with Steps Ahead and Bass Desires, collaborating with John Scofield, Bill Frisell and Marc Johnson. Living in Los Angeles since 1987, Peter has worked with artists like Vince Mendoza, Kate Bush, and Sadao Watanabe. He won his second Grammy with the WDR Big Band abd Brecker Brothers' Some Skunk Funk. His film credits include La La Land, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Secret Life of Pets, The Adventures of Tintin and Babylon.

Erskine runs Fuzzy Music, producing Grammy-nominated recordings, and has authored several acclaimed books and apps for musicians. He is retired Professor emeritus at the University of Southern California and is sponsored by Tama Drums, Vic Firth Stcks and Zildjian Cymbals. His latest solo recording is titled From Vienna to Hollywood.

Bass|Drew Gress

Drew Gress is one of the most respected bassists and composers in contemporary jazz. Known for his rich tone, rhythmic agility, and compositional depth, Gress brings a unique voice to every musical setting. His work is marked by a rare balance of intellect and intuition, making him a favorite collaborator for many of today's most forward-thinking jazz artists.

Gress has appeared on a wide range of influential recordings and international stages alongside artists such as John Abercrombie, Ravi Coltrane, Don Byron, Tim Berne, Ralph Alessi, Uri Caine, Marc Copland, and John Surman. His performances and recordings span the spectrum from chamber-like subtlety to explosive improvisation, always grounded by a powerful sense of time and form.

As a leader, Gress has released critically acclaimed albums including The Sky Inside, 7 Black Butterflies, The Irrational Numbers, and Heyday. These works showcase his distinctive compositional voice—lyrical, exploratory, and rhythmically compelling.

A graduate of Towson University and the Manhattan School of Music, Gress has also contributed significantly to jazz education, serving as artist-in-residence and guest faculty at institutions across the United States, Europe, and Asia. His creative work has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and Meet the Composer.

Gress's playing has been praised for its "exquisite time and a composer's sense of line," enabling him to shape the music from within with clarity and imagination. Whether performing in intimate acoustic settings or large-scale concert halls, he brings a profound sense of musicality and craft to every note.
