《天鵝之歌》其實並不算是聯篇歌曲,而是舒伯特過世後,集合他最後歲月寫下的14 首歌曲出版的成套樂譜,名稱來由是天鵝在死前會唱出優美旋律的傳聞。《小夜曲》是鋼琴模仿曼陀林撥奏的小情歌,旋律十分琅琅上口;

Claude LIN in Recital

This concert focuses on three of Schubert's "song cycles."【Die Schöne Müllerin】(The Fair Maid of the Mill) is considered the first artistically mature song cycle in the history of music. SCHUBERT adapted poetry by Wilhelm MÜLLER, about a young miller who falls in love with another miller's daughter, into twenty songs. The miller's daughter is out of his reach, and eventually, strolling the path along the brook, the young miller is overwhelmed by the memories, and drowns himself. This performance will include three of the twenty songs in the cycle. Halt! is the third. When the young miller saw the watermill, he remembered the good memories while he was working at the mill. He calls out excitedly, as the piano imitates the vigorous turning of the mill wheel. Des Müllers Blumen (The Miller's Flowers) is the 9th song. The quiet melody of the piano depicts the flowers beside the brook flowing with the wind. The blue flowers remind him of the blue eyes of the girl. Der Müller und der Bach (The Miller and the Brook) is the 19th song. The singer sings the dialogue between the miller and the brook, and finally, the miller reveals that the bottom of the brook is the only place where he can rest peacefully.

【Die Winterreise】(Winter Journey), based on Müller's poems, describes the traveler walking in the cold winter and telling of his despair. It comprises 24 songs. Der Lindenbaum (The Linden Tree) is the 5th. This tree is a place where travelers often stop and feel calm. The piano uses triplets to represent the scene of wind blowing and tree shadows moving. Die Post (The Post) is the 13th song. From the very beginning, you can hear the piano imitating the fast galloping sound of carriages and the blast from the post horn. The traveler recalls the time when he was so excited to receive a letter from his lover. Der Leiermann (The Hurdy-Gurdy Man) is the last song of the cycle. The traveler sees an old hurdy-gurdy player. The piano represents the wheelturning sound of the instrument. No matter what the traveler asked, the old man did not respond. In the end, the traveler asked whether he could leave with the old man, and the old man was not moved. Later generations believed that the old man stands

for the god of death, hinting at the final ending of the traveler.

【Schwanengesang】(Swan Song) is not actually a song cycle, but a set of music scores published after SCHUBERT's death, which collected 14 songs written in his last years. The name comes from the legend of the beautiful melody swans sing before death. The melodic piano in Ständchen (Serenade) imitates the plucking of the mandolin; in Der Atlas (The Atlas), the singer compares the grief he suffered to Atlas, the Greek mythological figure carrying the world, with the piano also presenting a very strong rhythm from the beginning; Die Taubenpost (The Pigeon Post) is believed to be SCHUBERT's last lied composition. The singer narrates that he sends out a pigeon every day to communicate with his lover, with a very brisk and happy style. In addition to song cycles, this concert includes several other lieder: An die Untergehende Sonne (To The Sunset), An den Mond (To The Moon), Nacht und Träume (Night and Dreams), and Der Erlkönig (The Elf-king), which is SCHUBERT's earliest and most representative lied adapted from the poem of Johann Wolfgang von GOETHE. Der Erlkönig requires the singer to perform the four roles: narrator, father, son, and the god of death. The piano conveys the response of the fierce environment such as the clatter of a horse's hoofs and the sound of wind and snow. It's a short but dramatic piece.
