「我要說的這個故事怪誕瘋狂，卻又稀鬆平常，但我也沒特別期待你們相信我說的話。我是真瘋了，才會希望有人相信這個故事，畢竟連我自己都覺得這一切太不可思議。我沒瘋，更沒喪失理智。明天就是我的死期，於是我只能趁今天說出這一切，減輕靈魂的負擔。我只想快快把這故事公諸於世，簡短扼要，不參雜任何個人評論想法。說穿了，這不過是一系列我家裡發生的瑣事，卻環環相扣，讓我陷入恐懼與折磨，摧毀了我的人生。不過我不想多做解釋。這些小事對我來說雖然恐怖，但聽在許多人耳裡，大概又是個巴洛克詭異怪談。也許在我死後，人們會在這故事中過濾我的幻覺，還原事件原貌。他們沒我這麼激動，能夠帶著點冷靜與理性，在我充滿畏怯的敘事中，釐清這一連串單純事件的前後關聯。」 愛倫坡的短篇小說《黑貓》是這樣開頭的。一個男子坐在監獄中，這是他人生的最後一天，而他開始緩緩敘述起他究竟是為何殺了自己的妻子，又為何走向這一步。文字儘管平實．卻令讀者不自覺地深陷詭異陰晦的巴洛克氛圍中，像是被命運牽連般難以抽身。

A nameless person sits on death row, awaiting his execution. He has been convicted of murder. He has killed his own wife. But he does not understand: how did this happen? What possessed him to do this? He begins to tell his story. The story of the black cat. “... to-morrow I die, and to-day I would unburthen my soul. My immediate purpose is to place before the world, plainly, succinctly, and without comment, a series of mere household events. In their consequences, these events have terrified -have tortured - have destroyed me.”–Edgar Allan Poe, The Black Cat “Is the black cat just fate, or the messenger of the evil?”It is the question Martin Haselböck tries to bring up in Black Cat. Three renowned artists in their respective creative fields - the Luxemburg-based theatre and film director Frank Hoffmann, Austrian conductor Martin Haselböck, and Academy Award-nominated Austrian film and multi-media artist Virgil Widrich–have created a multi-disciplinary project for music, dance and film. With a dramatic space created by Virgil Widrich, the acclaimed dancers Sylvia Camarda and Jean-Guillaume Weis perform to a soundtrack conceived by Martin Haselböck–using the unsettling music of contemporary English songwriter David Sylvian and arias from the cantatas of J.S. Bach, performed on stage by tenor and baroque ensemble–which underpins the journey into perdition and the abyss of a desperate murderer's soul as embodied in Edgar Allan Poe's novella. The audience can expect an enthralling work of contrasts and extremes, from baroque ensemble (oboe, five strings and organ) to visual multi-media, from Bach to Rock, including singing, dancing and acting. Originally titled as“New Angels,” the music theatre version of“Black Cat”not only touches upon“a world of killing and murder”but“out there the other world (the world of the angels) is beautiful,”says Martin Haselböck.
