TIFA, Multiverses in Theater
The concept of time in theater is inherently non-linear. Artists deftly navigate between the simultaneously existing and entangled past, present, and future. Often, they extract materials from memories or look back at the present from the perspective of the future. As spectators, we marvel at the fluidity of time and exclaim: "The present is simultaneously the past and the future!"
For the 2024 TIFA, we invite audiences to traverse the temporal multiverses. We aim to revisit those unforgettable, exhilarating moments. Artists draw from their robust and radiant traditions to create works in a variety of formats that resonate with future. They rediscover innovative power within the classics or explore contemporary social interaction through creativity. We can even hop on a time machine created through technology to return to the site of an event, to engage in dialogue through the work.
Join us in this journey! Let's accompany the boundary-defying artists as we navigate between the multiverses in theater. "The past can be revisited, and the future is within reach." This journey transcends the realm of physics; it is our present moment.

KAGAMI
, a presentation of legendary composer and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto in an unprecedented dimensional performance for an audience of 80 simultaneous viewers. Premiering earlier this year in both New York City at The Shed and the Manchester International Festival, the show received five stars from the Guardian, which called it "an otherworldly, strangely moving, even groundbreaking experience." It will be touring globally for the next three years.
KAGAMI
follows Medusa, a collaboration of generative architecture with Sou Fujimoto, first presented with the London Design Festival at the V&A's Raphael Court in 2021. The work was next presented in Brooklyn at Pioneer Works, and expanded to include a live performance element over 4 weekends with the brilliant modern pianist Kelly Moran.
In 2019 Tin Drum made history by presenting The Life with Marina Abramovi. at the Serpentine Galleries, London. It was the first large-scale Mixed Reality exhibition anywhere, with an over-capacity audience of 5,000 experiencing the piece over a week-long engagement. It went on to create a new market by selling through Christie's after a two-week exhibition in October 2020, despite the disruption of the global pandemic.
Eckert previously served as Director of Content Development for MR device manufacturer Magic Leap, joining the company in 2012. He worked in traditional art and media for thirty years prior to his MR focus. Eckert produced Control, Anton Corbijn' s award-winning feature film about Joy Division's lead singer Ian Curtis, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. He was Director of North America for Eutechnyx, a British video game development company. He began his career as a music journalist at 14 and became an editor of the US national

Text in the performance
There is, in reality, a virtual me.
This virtual me will not age, and will continue to play the piano for years, decades, centuries.
Will there be humans then?
Will the squids that will conquer the earth after humanity listen to me?
What will pianos be to them?
What about music?
Will there be empathy there?
Empathy that spans hundreds of thousands of years.
Ah, but the batteries won't last that long.
--Ryuichi Sakamoto, 2023
Fishing for the sound.
#4 Energy Flow
The next one I played is called Energy Flow, and I still don't understand why this piece was No.1 hit in 1999 and the Japanese chart.
#10 BB
So, the next piece will be the last one is called BB, means Bernardo Bertolucci. I wrote this piece literally 5 minutes after I heard the news of him passing away.
